Academic Department Manager

Job Description:

This position provides leadership for the academic, administrative, financial, and human resources operations for the Department of East Asian Studies.  It serves as the liaison between the department and other offices responsible for determining University-wide policy, procedures, and services (e.g. Dean of the Faculty, The College, Payroll and Controllerâ™s Office) and has sufficient knowledge of the departmentâ™s programs, services, processes, and resources required to relieve the faculty chair of day to day administrative operations.  In collaboration with the faculty chair, the manager also participates in strategic and logistical planning as well as the academic and administrative implementation of short- and long-term departmental goals and initiatives.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelorâ™s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.  

  • Strong financial and analytical skills required. 

  • Experience working in an institution of higher education with preference to experience in an academic department setting.

  • Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Effective interpersonal, communication and leadership skills with a proven ability to work with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students.

  • Computer proficiency in word processing, data management and spreadsheets.

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, year-round, multi-faceted academic work environment.

  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
