The College of Applied and Collaborative Studies (CACS) is ready to help students finish their degree so they can enter the professional world prepared to be a leader in their career. If you are starting college for the first time, our cohort-based Project Design and Analysis (PDA) program can provide you with the foundation to excel in any career. For students who already have some college credits but have not attended a four year academic institute, you can transfer into one of our three transfer ready programs – Applied Arts and Sciences, Applied Project Design and Analysis, or Industrial Distribution.
Position Overview
JOB LOCATED IN FRISCO AND DENTON
This position will provide academic advising support to the New College Academic Advising team by providing advanced academic counseling, career counseling, referrals, and degree program advising to undergraduate New College majors and prospective New College majors in individual and virtual sessions. This includes the expertise to implement, develop and evaluate programs designed to increase student retention and participation in general degree advising activities (preparation of degree plans, evaluation of transcripts, processing graduation applications, and community relations). New College serves students in Denton, Frisco, and online.
This role operates in a professional environment and routinely requires travel between the Denton and Frisco sites as a member of an advising team that proudly serves students in multiple locations.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Job Duties


o
Advising: Holistic academic advising to UNT CACS continuing and prospective students regarding university requirements and individual New College program requirements including the first point of escalation for more complex situations. Makes appropriate referrals to campus
resources. Researches and evaluates the effectiveness of current advising procedures and practices. Specific attention is given to developing and implementing creative ways to incorporate student career goals into students’ major selection. Trains team on best practices and other issues
related to overall student success.

Processing: Prepare and update degree audits for new students or change of majors, evaluating and applying transfer work in accordance with University and College policies; Assists team with processing questions. Review and process graduation applications; Document advising appointments and student interactions in the advising software and provides follow-up with students, as needed. Assists Academic Advisor(s) and Counselors with implementing special projects such as New Student Orientation tasks, College inbox/website content, and new programs.

Engagement: Prepare and present CACS degree information during New Student Orientation, major changer group sessions, and other group activities; assists with and participates in commencement ceremony duties. Assists with recruitment program development and other
special events. May represent New College by serving on campus committees.
o
Leadership: Contribute to the overall organizational health and performance of CACS programs through teamwork, knowledge sharing, professionalism, professional development, and professional relationship building. Maintains cordial and professional attitude within the office,
university, and community. Assist Sr. Counselor and Program Project Coordinator with day-to-day operations of the advising office, coordinates and prioritizes projects, and ensures services are available to students, staff, and visitors. Assists with training and feedback to individual team
members and escalates more complex issues to Senior Counselor and/or Director. Promotes goodwill and quality customer service to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Is effective in handling a variety of student situations.
o
Guidance: May oversee team projects, programs, and special populations. Assists Sr. Counselor and Program Project Coordinator with communications among the team, students, and Registrar’s office including, but not limited to instructions, university policy, deadlines, and post-semester
follow-up with students who did not meet requirements; Assists advising team with respective projects and on programs; Collaborates with New College faculty and staff to assist with recruiting and retention efforts.
o
Supervisory: May supervise student employees.
