Position Summary
The academic coordinator will work with the Public Health & Society program co-directors, faculty, and staff to develop and administer the undergraduate program and related initiatives, ensuring the smooth development and functioning of the PH&S program. Public health is ascending as a critical field of research and practice around the world, including in undergraduate education. The newly established Public Health & Society program will serve as the academic home to an interdisciplinary public health major and minor. The undergraduate program is intended to emphasize ethical training in public health science, and highlight the social determinants of health, particularly the development of a foundational understanding of how issues of equity, inclusion, and diversity influence health outcomes.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Program Administration

  • Develop and implement long-range planning with the program directors, including mission, program initiatives, budget planning and resource allocation, emerging academic priorities, and new projects.
  • Manage departmental orientation, meetings, and events, and represent PH&S at major events.
  • Undertake special projects, audits, and reports as required by the co-directors.
  • Assist with student recruiting activities and meet with prospective students.
  • Promote and implement programs to increase diversity in the program.
  • Supervise administrative assistant.

Academic Administration

  • Work with co-directors to develop, implement, manage, and maintain the curriculum.
  • Supervise course listings, schedules, and management of student records.
  • Serve as liaison with dean’s and vice dean’s offices and other academic units on undergraduate academic matters.
  • Serve on committees for undergraduate programs and as the contact person for academic matters.
  • Audit and certify majors and minors for graduation.
  • Provide academic student advising and manage the assignment of academic advisors.
  • Oversee study abroad advising and certification for PHS students. Serve as resource for students, regarding current policies and opportunities.
  • Manage the assessment process and reporting for the undergraduate program.
  • Assign teaching assistants.
  • Participate in the intellectual life of the PH&S program.

Program Communication

  • Manage and supervise internal and external communications with program constituents, including content creation.
  • Act as educational resource for information on opportunities for students.
  • Oversee maintenance of program website, event announcements and publication of monthly newsletter.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Ability to travel to various on- and off-campus locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. and/or MPH.
  • Work experience in public health related or health related academic administration.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated undergraduate advising experience.
  • Administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Knowledge of interdisciplinary public health programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to interact with people at all levels of the university.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to make appropriate decisions regarding student issues.
  • Excellent project-management, time-management, and organizational skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Flexibility and desire to expand and improve areas of expertise, as required by the position.


Required Qualifications

PhD in a related academic field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling eight years.

Salary Range
$52,000.00 - $88,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
