Academic and Career Advisor, Graduate Students
SOM Biomedical Sciences Grad Program
Location:  New Orleans, LA
Summary
The Graduate Student Academic and Career Advisor for the School of Medicine Biomedical Sciences Graduate (BMS) Program shall provide guidance, consultation, and expertise related to academic and career advising for students working toward their doctorate and master level degrees. They will work with all students to provide guidance with decisions regarding academic, career, and personal goals, ensuring a quality educational environment for learning. The Advisor will work closely with students to ensure that academic progress and milestones are met in a timely fashion, will facilitate Individual Development Plans, and provide career development opportunities tailored to individual student needs. They will work with the Office of Multicultural Affairs to ensure that BMS strives for diversity and inclusion in recruitment and retention of students and will oversee wellness for all students in the BMS graduate program. The Advisor will closely collaborate with the BMS Directors and staff for cross coverage for all duties as needed in this highly team-based program office. 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Experience with student academic advising and career development.
2. Knowledge of or experience with delivering and interpreting aptitude tests.
3. Knowledge of career development programs for master’s and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows
4. Knowledge and experience with academic and non-academic career opportunities.
5. Knowledge of diversity and inclusion initiatives and strategies.
6. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills  
7. Ability to work collaboratively as a positive, contributing member of a team  
8. Experience with data management, with a strong ability to use and understand data collected in spreadsheets and similar systems
9. Strong working knowledge of MS Office software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), database software) and web page development/content management programs/social media 
10. Has an appreciation for the cyclical nature of admission work and the flexibility to handle a variety of duties and projects throughout the day as well as throughout the year.
11. Must be willing and available to work nights and weekends during recruitment and application review season. Will have occasional travel.
12. Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, including students, faculty, academic deans, and senior administrators, as well as internal and external partners.
13. Ability to use independent judgement and manage and impart confidential information.
14. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
15. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty and administrators
Required Education and/or Experience
Master’s degree in education, counseling, or similar/related field and 5 years’ experience working with students as an academic advisor or career coach 
OR
PhD in similar field or STEM and 2 year’s counseling or related experience
Preferred Qualifications


1. Graduate and/or graduate medical education student and career advising

2. Experience with Banner, Courseleaf, Ilios, ExamSoft, CommonSpot (and Drupal), Canvas, Slate


Compensation Information
This position is classified as "exempt, salaried" and is assigned to pay grade 26.
