Job Summary

The College of Fine Arts (CFA) is hiring an individual who is interested in a career in academic advising and will join the strong, student success-centered CFA Undergraduate Affairs Team. (http://createsuccess.utah.edu) This position will be focused on advising students in the CFA studying Art, Art History, Dance, Film & Media Arts, Music, and Theatre.

The position offers an opportunity to advise students on degree requirements, academic policy, and processes for negotiating the undergraduate experience from recruitment to degree completion. The CFA orients advising in a teaching and learning perspective, and the goal of academic advising is to empower students to define and accomplish their academic goals. 

The Undergraduate Affairs Team seeks to foster an atmosphere of inclusion within the CFA where the diversity of individuals and their perspectives are valued & respected. Applications will be reviewed starting September 25th.

Responsibilities

1. Academic Advising of undergraduate students in all relevant areas—course requirements and selection; major and minor decision-making; policies and procedures; scholastic standards; new freshman and transfer issues; and other appropriate areas (on average, 65-70% of time will be spent directly advising undergraduate students)

2. Assisting the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Student Affairs with program planning and implementation, data collection and interpretation, and outcome assessment

3. Assisting with college and departmental needs, policies, and processes pertaining to the undergraduate experience, including facilitating undergraduate scholarship and curriculum exception processes, and, when appropriate, assisting in College of Fine Arts events

4. Maintaining current knowledge of campus resources, critical dates, as well as policies and procedures for undergraduate students

5. Participating in professional development activities, including intra-office and campus-wide advisor training, and (when appropriate) professional conferences

6. Participating in collaborative activities and ventures with other University departments and offices (and, when applicable, external organizations)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

Previous experience in an advising, counseling or teaching environment is preferred.

Preferences

Candidates should possess strong service orientation along with organizational, leadership, and program development skills, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to continuing professional development.

Master’s Degree; two years experience in academic advising, higher education student services, or teaching on the higher education level preferred. Knowledge of undergraduate education issues is desirable.
