Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Academic Advisor.

The Academic Advisor is responsible for serving as an assigned academic advisor for students majoring in programs in the College of Nursing and Health Professions (primarily those students not yet admitted to a program within the College), monitoring the academic progress of assigned advisees, assisting students and faculty with class registration activities, and resolving issues related to student academic progress and fulfillment of graduation requirements.

Duties/Responsibilities 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Meet with students regularly, helping guide them on their academic journey and beyond.
  • Serve as a liaison between the College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP) and its students.
  • Serve as an initial point of contact for students interested in program information.
  • Evaluate records of students seeking admission into a CNHP program.
  • Utilize student placement scores and academic records to advise students concerning enrollment into appropriate courses.
  • Make decisions concerning changes to students' class schedules.
  • Participate in recruitment and retention strategies, including but not limited to meeting with prospective students, planning orientation for incoming students, and advising current students.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required. (Note: this position is not limited to individuals with healthcare degrees/experiences, any degree is acceptable).
  • Attentiveness to detail; strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner is required.
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with students and faculty of all cultural backgrounds and experience levels required.
  • Proficient use of computers, internet, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and email software required.
  • Requires a compassionate and firm, yet fair, interaction with students.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Master’s degree preferred. (Note: this position is not limited to individuals with healthcare degrees/experiences, any degree is acceptable).
  • One year experience in academic advising or related field at the college level preferred.
  • Experience with pre-professional advising, major/career exploration process, and working with students at academic risk preferred.
  • Knowledge of NACADA (Global Community for Academic Advising) Core Values, CAS (Council for the Advancement of Standards) professional standards, and Federal guidelines affecting students and faculty (i.e., FERPA) preferred.
