Job Summary

 

The John Martinson Honors College at Purdue University is actively recruiting and accepting applications for a Senior Honors Advisor, to be located in Indianapolis. Honors Advisors provide supplemental advising about the John Martinson Honors College curriculum to current and prospective Honors College students. This is an opportunity to join an energetic, student-centered team. The salary range for this position is $52,000-$57,000, commensurate with experience, and includes a generous benefits package.

There is an expectation to center the student in an asset framed approach where advising differentiates educational guidance to meet students where they are and acknowledges the critical value of each student’s unique social capital. Advisors will empower students to be active responsible learners and assist them in making well-informed decisions; and guide students in course selection and the process for registering for courses. The Senior Honors Advisor will identify campus activities, and programs opportunities related to students' major while maintaining a consistent pattern of contact and communications with assigned students. This position will use data to provide timely outreach to students on their academic progress and conduct audits on student’s degree progress and assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources. There is an expectation to maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records while teaching students about the university’s structure, systems, policies, and practices.
 

HIGHER LEVEL DUTIES
In addition to advising responsibilities, senior advisors will also assist in development and implementation of department-level advisor training, serve on university-level committees, and serve as academic liaisons to a variety of departments and programs. Senior advisors are also asked to coordinate major projects, programs, and initiatives that support the mission of their advising unit, their college, and the university related to advising.


Duties and Responsibilities:

STUDENT ADVISING AND EDUCATING - Provide academic advising to assigned students; assess other needs and make professional referrals; maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records. Interpret University policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, staff and administration.  Guide students in course selection and scheduling; assist in resolving academic problems; identify and monitor academic progress. 
Train lower-level academic advisors on methods to assist students in creation of short and long-term curricular and co-curricular goals.  Develop and/or present college/department session for new and transfer students

 

COMMUNICATIONS – Communicate regularly to encourage a trusting relationship with students via e-mail, text, BoilerConnect campaigns and other electronic platforms. Document contact notes on advising appointments and correspondence in BoilerConnect. Assess when a situation calls for more probing questions. Make explicit students’ responsibility for their own academic and professional success. Build and maintain contacts with other advising units.  Communicate with students regarding curricular and co-curricular opportunities. May participate in orientation activities for college/department. Teach students about professional communication standards.
Train new academic advisors on communication skills regarding curricular and co-curricular opportunities.  Represent the college/department on a variety of curricular and co-curricular topics through participation at student events and activities.  

 

DEPARTMENT SUPPORT – May participate in college level events and programs. May participate in events that serve advising in the university community. Assist with the recruitment and retention of diverse undergraduate students for the academic unit/campus. 
Coordinate and plan for staffing of college/department advising initiatives. Serve on university committees. Participate in events that support the college. Represent advising at university events.
May form and chair committees to evaluate and implement orientation activities.  Facilitate new student appointment material, trainings and activities for college/department.

 

ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION DUTIES – Submit necessary data and documentation for proper maintenance of student records. Participate in staff meetings. Participate in systems training and updates.  Assist in the preparation of reports and serving on advising related committees.  Act as liaison between students, faculty, staff, campus and University constituents.
Collaborate and provide insight to Schedule Deputy regarding scheduling issues.  Serve as college/department candidate coordinator.  Serve on committees and provide input on university policies and procedures, admissions, etc.


Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must have an earned graduate or professional degree in a field relevant to the position.
  • Three years of relevant work experience required.  
  • Experience with student advising preferred.
