Overview of Academic Advisor
The School of Education & Counseling is currently seeking an Academic Advisor! The primary role of the Academic Advisor is to provide support to candidates concerning their academic plans and progress, advises them on scheduling courses, choice of major and concentration, and other academic activities and career goals, to assist the candidate in making decisions about their personal educational goals leading to graduation and licensure.
Pay: $41,400 - $49,000/annual
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
Duties and Responsibilities of Academic Advisor
- Applies professional student services concepts, provide the full range of student services to the undergraduate student population served by the School of Education and Counseling and the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences
- Advises faculty on department, college, and university policies and procedures; review students' progress and advise student and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions to the faculty as well as documents progress and reports at faculty meetings
- Advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to prospective applicant's goals.
- Oversees the processing, evaluation, and awarding of student grants, scholarships, fellowships, and other awards
- Provides input to curriculum planning in collaboration with department chair, program coordinators, and graduate adviser, and with other departments, to ensure students' progress through course sequences, avoiding conflicts, and ensuring compliance with policies
- Responsible for updating departmental websites and campus academic guides/catalogs with undergraduate student related information
- Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination
- Plans and implements, high-visibility student events
- Provides verification of completion and validity of programs to districts, universities, and state departments of education
- Performs other duties as assigned

Education of Academic Advisor
- Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field (i.e., social work, counseling) or a;
- Master’s degree in a humanities, education, or social science discipline
Experience of Academic Advisor
- Three years of professional work experience required
- Professional work experience within a public higher education setting in an academic advising and/or retention-related position preferred
Core Competencies of Academic Advisor
- Ability to learn, understand, and relay the full range of student services available; including enrollment services, academic policies, and procedures of PNW
- Ability to initiate and maintain retention-related outreach projects, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines; work in a fast-paced environment and possess excellent organizational and time management skills
- Knowledge of student databases such as Banner, information systems, and communication technologies highly desired
- Experience working with a variety of databases e.g., Access, Excel, Sharepoint)
- Strong interpersonal and human relations skills essential, as well as excellent verbal and written communication
- Ability to maintain confidentiality; adapt to change and willingness to learn new things; professionally represent PNW; work evening and weekend hours, as assigned
