Position Overview
Student Services office at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor/Recruiter. The Student Services office currently serves approximately 700 undergraduate majors, as well as pre-journalism, journalism minor and prospective freshmen and transfer students.
The Academic Advisor/Recruiter will work in a team-orientated office to provide individual academic advising, guidance and targeted outreach to current students. The advisor serves as a resource for academic issues, admission and graduation requirements, degree planning, academic support services, degree certification, and goal development. The position will assist with maintenance of detailed and accurate records, academic standing and proofing of materials.
The Academic Advisor/Recruiter will also assist with recruitment and marketing functions to attract students to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications undergraduate programs. This position will meet with prospective students and their families/guests through individual appointments, group events, college fairs and high school visits. Recruitment responsibilities will be shared with the DEIB advisor/recruitment coordinator. The individual will coordinate with the Office of Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, the assistant dean for student services, journalism faculty and staff, high schools and journalism education associations to effectively serve prospective students.
This is a full-time, 12-month position. This position reports to the Assistant Dean/Student Services Coordinator.
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the time of appointment.
Job Description
45% Student Recruitment
• In cooperation with the Office of Admissions, meet with prospective students and their families, in appointments scheduled by Admissions or directly with the School.
• Participate in off-campus recruitment efforts such as Rock Chalk Receptions, Chancellor Receptions, Rock Chalk Roadshow, KU Academic Showcases, and recruiting tours of the state and region.
• Build partnerships within the University and with high schools and community colleges in Kansas and neighboring states.
• Serve as primary contact for transfer student visits and preliminary advising.
• Visit area high schools and recruit at college fairs for high school students.
• Work with School faculty and staff on high school outreach and visits, which may include workshops or presentations to students and counselors.
o Primary contact for out-bound (in school) high school visits/groups
• Represent the School at regional and national conferences of journalism education associations.
• Assist with developing and giving presentations at summer orientation sessions and work with the School's assistant dean to assist in academic advising and enrollment of incoming freshmen at summer orientation sessions.
• Coordinate admit letter mailings.
• Participate in on-campus recruitment efforts as needed.
• Work in collaboration with the DEIB Advisor/Recruitment Coordinator to plan and implement recruitment initiatives and develop comprehensive recruitment and communication plans.
45% Academic Advising
• Provide individual advising, guidance and targeted outreach to pre-journalism students, journalism majors, and journalism minors on academic and/or personal issues including: explaining admission and graduation requirements, degree planning, academic support services, degree certification, and goal development.
• Assist advisees with long-range planning, included but not limited to discussions regarding academic and personal support, engagement, career possibilities, study abroad and internships.
• Maintain current knowledge of university and school policies and procedures as they relate to undergraduate education, retention, progression and graduation.
• Assist with student enrollment each semester and during New Student Orientation.
• Assist student services coordinator with maintaining accurate academic records related to admission, graduation, academic standing, etc.
• Assist with enrollment-related research for scheduling and admissions purposes.
10% Programming and Project Support
• Develop and coordinate curricular and/or co-curricular programs, activities, or events targeted to first-year students and/or pre-journalism students.
• Assist with annual scholarship and awards ceremony.
• Assist with annual graduate recognition ceremony.
• Assist with Hawk Week and new journalism student orientation events.
• Assist with course scheduling, scholarship record-keeping and other duties as assigned.
• Assume other duties as assigned and/or required by the assistant or associate dean.
