Job Summary

This position will be filled as an Academic Advisor or as a Senior Academic Advisor. The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.

In this role, you will create an open, respectful, and inclusive environment by utilizing an equity-minded, student-centered practice that emphasizes mutual respect, dignity, self-awareness, and authenticity. In addition, you will apply professional student services concepts and provide the full range of student services to the undergraduate student population served by the Department Horticulture and Landscape Architecture.


Responsibilities:
  • Review students' progress and advise student on requirements for degree/program completion
  • Identify students with progression problems and recommends interventions
  • Works with student data management systems
  • Make explicit students’ responsibility for their own academic and professional success
  • Contribute to a robust student recruitment and retention program
  • Advise prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to prospective applicant's goals
  • Provide input to curriculum planning in collaboration with department chair, program coordinators, and graduate adviser, and with other departments, to ensure students' progress through course sequences, avoiding conflicts, and ensuring compliance with policies
  • Assist with social media relevant to student recruitment and retention and alumni relations
  • Update departmental websites and campus academic guides/catalogs with undergraduate student related information
  • Conduct periodic communication with alumni
  • Interpret campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination
  • Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records

Academic Advisor

Required:

  • Master’s degree with expertise in counseling and interest in topics relevant to Purdue’s Horticulture and Landscape Architecture
  • 1 year of work experience with student services, student affairs, career development, counseling, teaching, and/or advising
  • Knowledge of academic advising
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills and professionalism in dealing with alumni, students, faculty and staff
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build working relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail
  • Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility and handling confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment
  • Basic proficiency in software: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook (Electronic email/Calendaring)
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule; including nights and weekends to attend occasional events

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with academic advising
  • Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University
  • Familiarity with MyPurdue, Banner, COGNOS, Curriculog, Slate, ScholarshipUniverse, BoilerConnect, Unitime, Textbook Management, etc.

Senior Academic Advisor

Required:

  • Master’s degree with expertise in counseling and interest in topics relevant to Purdue’s Horticulture and Landscape Architecture
  • 3 year of work experience with student services, student affairs, career development, counseling, teaching, and/or advising
  • Knowledge of academic advising
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
