The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Academic Advisor position.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals.

Senior Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.  Work is performed fully independently.

Job Summary:

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recognizes academic advising is integral to student success. The person in this position will collaborate with a team of academic advisors, faculty, and administrators to support students from entry to graduation. Members of the CLAS Academic Advising team share a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; student advocacy; and student success. Successful candidates for this position will be prepared to articulate their passion for supporting diverse college students through a developmental and culturally responsive orientation to academic advising. Additionally, successful candidates will demonstrate their experience working effectively and collaboratively as part of a team to support a high volume of students.

Overview of Position Activities:

Academic Advising

  • Engage in developmental and inclusive practices to advise a richly diverse caseload of new and continuing CLAS undergraduate degree-seeking students through to graduation
  • Advance equity by understanding and advocating on behalf of the needs of all student populations including students of color, first-generation, first-time to college, transfer, veteran, international, and online students
  • Partner with students to develop advising relationships that foster students’ sense of belonging to college and campus communities
  • Communicate timely, consistent, and accurate information about degree requirements including general, CU Denver Core, CLAS, and academic program (i.e., major and minor) graduation requirements
  • Develop a depth of knowledge and understanding of specific major and minor requirements to advise a focused caseload of CLAS majors and minors
  • Interpret and communicate information about complex college and university policies and procedures
  • Document detailed notes from email, phone, online/virtual, scheduled and drop-in advising contact with students
  • Deliver individualized support that is responsive to student needs and facilitates relevant referrals to campus resources
  • Engage in professional development activities to remain current with academic advising best practices

New Student Programs

  • Prepare for and facilitate in-person and virtual academic advising presentations and appointments for groups of first-time, first-year, and transfer students, including online-only students, during New Student Orientation
  • Support and implement processes to ensure the accuracy of new student records and Degree Audits related to prior learning credit (e.g., Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual or Concurrent Enrollment, and transfer credit)
  • Collaborate with campus partners to promote new student engagement experiences (e.g., First-Year Experiences) that support students through their transition into CU Denver and CLAS

Retention and Graduation

  • Develop, conduct, and track proactive outreach campaigns to advising caseload, including specific student populations, using advising tools and systems
  • Implement retention and early intervention initiatives for students in need of academic support, including students on different levels of academic standing
  • Collaborate with campus constituents to promote student engagement experiences (e.g., internships and independent studies) that assist students in exploring and preparing for careers or post-baccalaureate education
  • Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Center for Undergraduate Exploration & Advising, Admissions, Registrar, Student Transitions and Family Engagement, First-Year Experiences, etc.) to support campus-wide student success initiatives
  • Proactively monitor students’ degree progress and support students’ development of academic plans using advising tools and systems
  • Support returning and readmitted students, including students returning from academic suspension
  • Complete initial and final graduation checks for fall, spring, and summer graduates

Committee and Campus Involvement

  • Represent CLAS Academic Advising on college and university committees
  • Serve as a primary academic advising liaison to designated CLAS academic departments, programs, and university student affairs partners
  • Partner with liaisons in CLAS academic departments to remain current on and communicate major and minor program updates or changes to the CLAS Academic Advising team
  • Collaborate with the CLAS transfer credit and degree audit team and major advisor(s) to support transfer credit evaluation and degree audit functionality 

Advising Systems and Technology

  • Use CU Student Integrated Systems (CU-SIS), uAchieve® , EAB Navigate, CollegeSource® Systems (i.e., TES and Transferology Lab), OnBase® , and Slate by Technosolutions to advise students
  • use web-based tools (e.g., Zoom® , Microsoft Teams® , and Qualtrics® ) to facilitate academic advising presentations, including online/virtual advising appointments, communicate with colleagues, and support assessment of advising initiatives

The CLAS Academic Advising Office supports approved flexible schedules and hybrid work consistent with the needs and responsibilities of this position. This position may be responsible for additional relevant activities that support the work and mission of the CLAS Academic Advising Office. Please note: some position activities require evening and weekend commitments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Academic Services Professional

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • One year of full-time professional-level higher education experience in an academic advising or student affairs office or position
    • Twelve (12) months of paraprofessional experience at the graduate level (e.g., graduate assistantship experience) in an academic advising or student affairs office or position may be counted toward the full-time professional-level experience.

Academic Services Senior Professional

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Three years of full-time professional-level higher education experience in an academic advising or student affairs office or position (paraprofessional experience, including graduate assistantship experience, may not be counted as full-time professional-level experience)

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience working with undergraduate academic advising, new student, and retention programs including orientation, early action, student and academic support programs, or other enrollment and retention activities
  • Demonstrated skills and experience utilizing technology to support proactive and effective academic advising practices and processes across multiple modalities (i.e., in-person, phone, and virtual/remote)
  • Success supporting a large and diverse caseload of students
  • A master’s degree (completed or in progress) in higher education, student affairs, college student personnel, counseling, education or related fields from a regionally accredited college or university or two years of full-time professional-level higher education experience in an academic advising or student affairs office or position

Please note: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $43,000-$48,000 for the Academic Services Professional level and $45,000-$50,000 for the Academic Services Senior Professional level.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
