About the Department
The Psychology Department consists of 28 faculty members, the staff of the advising center, the staff of the Psychoeducational Clinic, and the 4 members of our office staff, as well as over 1000 undergraduate students and 125 graduate students pursuing their doctoral degrees.
The faculty are outstanding scholars, many of whom have won awards for teaching and research and/or are fellows in the major professional societies in Psychology. Faculty have received research grants and training grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes for Health, the National Institute on Aging, the Army Research Laboratory, the Army Research Institute, the Department of Education, and numerous companies.
Essential Job Duties
The Psychology Department at North Carolina State University invites applications for an undergraduate academic advising position. The position is a full-time, 12 month appointment. Responsibilities include the following:
Academic Advising (90%)
  • The advisor will help undergraduate Psychology students navigate the requirements of the Psychology degree completion process.
  • The advisor will provide support with course planning and course selection, academic concerns, understanding university regulations, and career planning.
  • The advisor will guide students on their path to setting, pursuing, and achieving academic and career goals.

Student Support Services (10%)
  • The advisor will stay informed about and transmit information to students regarding: departmental/university courses and high impact offerings, university policies and regulations, university resources, post-graduation planning and opportunities (e.g., graduate school, professional programs, careers in Psychology).
  • The advisor will support the department in planning and executing new student orientation sessions as well as the undergraduate commencement ceremony.
Other Responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree plus additional credentials or professional training and experience relevant to undergraduate advising or student affairs.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills: someone who enjoys interacting with students. 
  • Very strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to adjust to and work well in stressful/high-demand and multitasking situations. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently. 
  • Ability to build knowledge of University/College/Departmental policies, procedures, and requirements. 
  • Basic knowledge of the field of Psychology. 
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Moodle (or different learning management system).
Preferred Qualifications
  • A demonstrated record of success in advising/mentoring/working with undergraduate students. 
  • An understanding of university structure and administration.
  • Experience working with large academic programs. 
  • Post-baccalaureate degree or alternative credentials in student affairs/advising/or higher education.
