Job Overview

The Medical Sciences Baccalaureate Program is seeking to hire an Academic Advisor (UC Salary Grade 14) to work with the program’s Students, Staff, and Faculty to meet our program’s objectives.

 

The Medical Sciences Baccalaureate Program offers undergraduate education in the basic medical sciences to prepare students to be competitive for admission to professional schools - including medicine, physician assistant, and dentistry- and graduate programs in the life sciences and many more.  Learn more here: http://med.uc.edu/medicalsciences.

 

The selected candidate will provide academic advising, intervention, support services, and programming to students.  The position requires a high degree of accountability, responsibility and a strong student-centric approach. The individual will be expected to exercise sound judgment as it relates to dealing with students, faculty, staff, administrative personnel, and parents.


Essential Functions

The Academic Advisor will report to the Associate Dean of Baccalaureate Programs and will:

  • The main task of the Advisor is to foster student success.
  • Advise current and prospective students on how to meet their educational and career goals through best practices in advising and appropriate referrals to student support services.
  • Create academic plans, maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, meet with students to assess and discuss progress, and support students in meeting Medical Sciences Program requirements.
  • Give presentations to various classes/populations as well as new student advising at orientation. The Advisor may be called upon to give Admissions presentations to prospective applicants to the program.
  • Work closely with faculty and staff on programmatic and student issues.
  • Oversee administrative task such as course ordering, course evaluations and serve on university committees as necessary.
  • This position will occasionally require light evening and weekend work hours and may include local travel to events to assist with recruitment for the program.
  • The Advisor must be detail-oriented and have strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills. Must be able to retain a high volume of programmatic, college, and university related information while having the ability to critically think through complex situations.

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree


Required Experience

Zero (0) to one (1) year of student service or related experience.


Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Degree in Education or related field, and basic experience in advising and/or mentoring college students, and demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 
  • Prior experience with electronic degree audit systems and proficiency with computer systems used for advising such as Catalyst (Oracle PeopleSoft) is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work both independently, and as a member of a team.
