Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five years of experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area

  • Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits

Job Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising for the College - Delivers academic advice and other services to current and prospective undergraduate students, as well as their parents and other clients including University administrators, resources providers, and departmental advisors. Improves academic advising services, enhances student retention and graduation rates, provides exceptional experiences for undergraduate students, and develops community within the organization. Advises students on admission/readmission, professional concerns, housing, financial aid, student services, degree programs, academic schedules, study abroad opportunities, course planning and selection, education and career goals. Advises students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns and determines possible courses of action. Reviews degree plans with students. Processes add/drop, Q-drops, withdrawal questions, change of curriculum, course substitutions. Establishes and monitors student probationary terms as necessary. Advises students on academic preparation, time management, test anxiety and study skills. Refers students to University resources for students with disabilities, writing assistance, and counseling. Generates degree evaluations as needed. Provides educational opportunities for students.
  • Orientations and Recruiting - Manages the development and implementation of strategies to recruit students for the College. Works with departments and college Strategic Communication to maintain recruiting materials, program requirements, including department and program brochures and web sites. Ensures regular announcements and updates are sent to faculty and students. Leads in the development of admission opportunities for transfer applicants to the College. Uses SLATE for recruitment tracking. Meets with incoming majors during new student conferences (orientation). Coordinates conference information with the dean’s office and facilitates departmental tasks at each conference. Provides information and resources to prospective undergraduate students, parents, and other university officials. Attends college and university recruiting events and programs. Meets with freshmen and transfer students during new student conferences. Meets with readmitted students to facilitate re-entry into the university and creation of a degree plan. Assists with various recruiting efforts set by the College and the Office of Admissions.
  • Advising Processes and Records - Utilizes advising systems as directed by the Office of the Registrar, Information Technology, and Enterprise Information Systems. This includes 100% compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Requires use of Banner/Compass for registration purposes, processing withdrawals, Q-drops, adjustments, and other actions. Follows TAMU policies and procedures for special and routine cases. Generates degree plans. Submits adjustments and curricular exceptions. Reviews and approves Student Degree Planners. Tracks student successes and problems using SSC-Campus. Works with departments and auxiliary services to identify ways to connect students to services and/or help overcome administrative obstacles student face. Serves as lead college advisor for graduation clearance. Evaluates and approves requests for adjustments in the degree plan, double major/double degree requests and adjustments, study abroad pre-approval forms, course overload requests, curricular exceptions, and using independent judgment in the adjustment of student records, makes recommendations to the Associate Dean as needed.
  • Appeals and Petition Processing - Acts as a point of contact for appeals and petitions submitted to the Undergraduate Programs Office. Serves on Academic Appeal & Petition Review Board with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs. Researches and evaluates incoming appeals and petitions. Evaluates and approves requests for various actions using independent judgement in the adjustment of student records, and makes recommendations to the Associate Dean and other members of the Review Board as needed.
  • Committee Work - Represents the College of Liberal Arts at planning and organizational meetings regarding student admission, recruitment, and retention programming. Assists Director of Advising with professional development program creation for college advisors. Performs other duties as assigned.
