Job Description

The Academic Advisor IV, under general supervision, recruits and advises students concerning their educational or career goals, academic requirements, and related personal concerns; provides information on and refers students to university resources that can assist in meeting their needs or solving problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides academic advice and guidance to students for all first-year and four-year engineering programs at the Higher Education Center at McAllen (HECM). Advises students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns and determines possible courses of action. Verifies completion of degree requirements. Approves and signs degree plans, add/drops, Q drops, withdrawals, and change of curriculum requests. Monitors student probationary terms. Consults with students about no grade requests, no record drops, and applications for readmission. Meets with and refers students to available resources and departments. Prepares academic and advising reports.
  • Monitors general engineering student progress toward entry-to-a-major.
  • Verifies completion of degree requirements. Reviews and provides input on scholarship applications, as needed. Monitors student progress and degree requirements.
  • Advises students on academic preparation, time management, test anxiety, and study skills, and makes appropriate referrals to campus resources and support services.
  • Answers inquiries and provides information to current students, prospective students, and families/parents. Conducts and supports on-campus recruiting and outreach events, activities, and programs as needed.
  • Develops and presents advising materials and programs for students. Conducts new student orientation. Provides oversight of students during new student orientation and registers new students.
  • May teach certified first-year experience courses.
  • Interprets policies and procedures. Interacts with faculty to provide an exchange of information and to enhance the advisement of students, including securing review and approval of course substitutions for degree plans.
  • Develops and revises advising-related informational material, handbooks, and newsletters.
  • May develop or manage projects or processes and may represent the department/college on committees, special initiatives, or projects.
  • Other duties as assigned, including up to 10% departmental service of allowable functions as assigned by the AOC Dean and with consultation with the Department Head.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience:

  • Five years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. 
  • Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. 
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely. 
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. 
  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
