Who we are  

The Intercollegiate School of Engineering Medicine (EnMed) is a tripartite collaboration between Texas A&M’s College of Engineering, College of Medicine and the state’s top-ranked Houston Methodist Hospital established to transform healthcare through translational interdisciplinary research, the development of medical technologies, and the development and training of “Physicianeers.” The EnMed Physicianeer is a new kind of problem-solving doctor uniquely qualified to address some of healthcare’s greatest challenges. These graduates receive a medical doctorate and master of engineering degree focused on the design and implementation of medical technologies in the same four years through a revolutionary integrated curriculum.

The School of Engineering Medicine is seeking an Academic Advisor III, to serve in the heart of Houston's Medical Center. We are searching for an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse and highly qualified candidates. The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to communicate effectively the institutional requirements pertaining to graduate degree completion and university resources that help students in meeting individual academic needs. The Academic Advisor III, manages academic advising under the supervision of the Associate Director for Enrollment and Academic Services. The ideal candidate will thrive in a developing work environment, views problems as opportunities, and enjoys taking initiative to solve problems. The ability to complete work projects with accuracy and speed is highly preferred for this role. The successful candidate will enjoy working with diverse student populations, shows professionalism for quality work, and strives to provide excellent customer service. Location: Houston, TX

Salary Range: $36,512.00 - $46,924.80 annually (Based on selected hire’s qualifications)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Four years' experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications
  • Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Preferred Experience:

  • Professional experience in higher education or a medical setting
  • Some supervisory experience
 

Responsibilities:

  • College Advising & Retention - Serves as the lead advisor for the School of Engineering Medicine. Manages program changes from previous catalogs and communicates changes to internal and external groups as necessary. Updates materials (as needed) with departmental personnel and other recruiting publication efforts. Delivers academic advice and other services to current and prospective undergraduate students as well as their parents. Collaborates with departmental advisors. Maintains strict adherence to FERPA policy. Assists departmental advisors in identifying student success rates with the use of the Educational Advisor Board’s (EAB) Student Success Collaborative program. Advises academically at-risk students with academic, probationary, and personal concerns. Advises courses of action and refers students to other university services as needed. Fosters retention through mentoring and collecting academic data. Works directly with students to resolve extenuating circumstances, complaints, appeals, and outlines academic recover options. Uses professional judgement to identify and determine the appropriate course of action for students in retention programming. 
  • Student Records - Evaluates and approves requests for adjustments in the degree plan, course overload requests, curricular exceptions, uses independent judgment in the adjustment of student records, and makes recommendations to the Associate Director as needed. 
  • Program Development and Committee Work - Represents the School of Engineering Medicine at planning and organizational meetings regarding student enrollment. Liaisons with the Office of the Registrar, including Curricular Services and Degree Audit, in order to provide up-to-date information regarding the processing of adjustments and curricular exceptions. 
  • Reporting and Coordination - Assists the Associate Director on projects and reports, including undergraduate course scheduling, admissions and school statistical and recruiting reports. Orients new students on services available at TAMU. Develops the information packets given to all new students.
  • Appeals and Petition Processing - Serves on Academic Appeal & Petition Review Board. Researches and evaluates incoming appeals and petitions. Evaluates and approves requests for various actions using independent judgement in the adjustment of student records. Makes recommendations to the Associate Director and other members of the Review Board as needed.  Performs other duties as assigned.
