The Academic Advisor III in the Engineering at Galveston program advises First Time in College (FTIC) general engineering students from their New Student Conference to entry‐to‐a‐major (ETAM); advises engineering students concerning their educational or career goals, academic requirements, and related personal concerns; provides information on and refers students to University resources that can assist them in meeting their needs or solving their problems; refers students to engineering departments regarding major and career specific questions; fields general advising questions from admitted students; monitors student progress and advises general engineering students who are not in a major by the end of their fourth semester.  They also serve as a local advisor for all of Galveston’s four-year engineering programs and serve as a point‐of‐contact for departmental academic advisors and general engineering/engineering technology students. We are looking to fill two Academic Advisor III positions for TAMU Galveston.


  • Provides academic advice and guidance to students for all Engineering at Galveston first-year and four-year programs. Advises students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns and determines possible courses of action.  Approves and signs degree plans, course substitutions, add/drops, Q drops, withdraws, and change of curriculum.  Approves, establishes, and monitors student probationary terms. Advises students on the policy and processes for no grade requests, no record drops, and applications for readmission.

  • Monitors general engineering student progress toward entry‐to‐a‐major;

  • Advises students on academic preparation, time management, test anxiety, and study skills; interacts with faculty to provide an exchange of information and to enhance the advisement of students; prepares various academic and advising reports.

  • Verifies completion of degree requirements. Serves as a non-voting member on department curriculum committee and/or scholarship award committee if requested by the department. Monitors student progress and degree requirements. Designs and implements student support programs and serves as an ombudsperson to facilitate retention. 

  • Answers inquiries and provides information to prospective students, students, and parents. Meets with and refers students to available resources and departments. Assists in the development of systems for maintaining records of student contacts.

  • Develops and presents training materials and programs. Assists with family visits and group tours.  Assists in conducting new student orientation.  Provides oversight of students during new student orientation and registers new students. May teach certified first-year experience courses.

  • Interprets policies and procedures. Interacts with faculty to provide an exchange of information and to enhance the advisement of students. Prepares academic and advising reports.

  • Develops and revises informational material, handbooks, and newsletters.  Creates and gives presentations about the University and Engineering at Galveston to visiting groups.

  • Participates in on campus recruiting and outreach events, activities, and programs as needed.

  • May develop or manage projects or processes and represent the department/college on committees, special initiatives, or projects.
