Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years' experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
  • Must be able to interact with students
  • Customer service oriented, excelled interpersonal skills, high ethical standards and a commitment to excellence
  • Ability to deal with sensitive information in a confidential manner
  • Ability to work well under deadlines
  • Ability to positively interact with diverse groups of university personnel

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • Ability to travel; Travels with Advisors to the Higher Education Center, McAllen campus, in order to participate in New Student Conference

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree or above in education, counseling, or general subject area of placement
  • More than two years’ experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area
  • Study Abroad advising experience. Student organization experience
  • Experience with program assessment, degree evaluation and graduation audit experience

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Class “C” driver’s license

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Spanish language capabilities. Knowledge of Zoom meetings, word processing and spreadsheet programs
  • Written and oral communication skills, ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, good organizational skills, leadership, conflict resolution and decision-making skills
  • COMPASS/BANNER experience
  • Knowledge of TAMU campus resources

 

Responsibilities:

  • Undergraduate Advising - Approves and signs degree plans, course substitutions, add/drop, Q-drops, withdrawals, and changes of curriculum. Monitors degree requirements. Monitors student probationary terms as necessary. Advises students on probation. Refers students on academic preparation, time management, test anxiety, and study skills to other University resources; Responds to inquiries from students and parents. Interprets University and College rules and regulations, and policies and procedures. Advises and refers students with respect to academic schedules, course schedules, completion of common body of knowledge courses, course planning and selections, or related personal concerns and determine possible courses of action. Advise or refer students with questions regarding readmission, professional, academic, housing, student services, degree programs, major options, financial aid, career and educational goals. Interacts with faculty to provide an exchange of information and to enhance the advisement of students. Communicates effectively in writing and verbally with customers of diverse backgrounds.  Participates in advising students in the Spanish Certification program.  Serves as primary or secondary instructor of an internship course for Spanish certification program.
  • New Student Conference and Registration - Uses BANNER/COMPASS for student registration, degree audit, course prerequisites, transfer equivalencies, withdrawals, Q-drop processing, etc. Participates in New Freshmen and Transfer orientations and conferences and registers students during New Student Conferences. Maintains records and student contacts. Travels with Advisors to the Higher Education Center, McAllen campus, in order to participate in New Student Conference.  Assists with preregistration of McAllen campus students.
  • Assessment of Program - Assists with implementation and oversight of undergraduate special programs, including retention learning communities and honors. Assists with assessment of developed programs, including keeping statistical data and yearly reporting.
  • Retention Efforts - Participates in oversight of specific functions, including the direction of support personnel to accomplish those functions. Fosters retention of identified groups of students through activities such as mentoring, monitoring of student grades, and other support programs; implements projects to achieve specific activities or outcomes. Interacts with college and other University offices regarding admissions, registration, advising and counseling; develops and revises informational materials, handbooks and newsletters for students and departments. Serve as instructor for a First Year Experience course.
  • Recruitment - Provides academic advice to undergraduate students, prospective students, and their parents. Travel to high schools to present and distribute information concerning University programs and opportunities. This may require driving of a personal or University vehicle. Advises or refers students with questions regarding admission, readmission, professional, academic, housing, student services, degree programs, major options, financial aid, career and educational goals. Serves to facilitate the application and admission of students; Participate in University/college recruiting activities; meets with prospective students. Assists in developing contacts with high school and community college teachers, counselors and administrators as a mechanism for identifying students for recruitment.  Participates in organization and leadership of Veterinary Enrichment Camp and, as such, assists as a liaison to Camps and Programs for Minors through Student Activities and Campus Housing. Performs other duties as assigned.
