The Academic Advisor II, under general supervision, recruits and advises undergraduate students concerning their career goals and academic requirements; provides information on and refers students to University resources that can assist in meeting their needs or solving problems; may supervise projects. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, high ethical standards and a commitment to excellence.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have or be able to obtain a Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of employment

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree or above in education, counseling, or general subject area of placement
  • Two years experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area
  • University Honors experience
  • Student organization experience
  • Experience with program assessment, degree evaluation and graduation audit experience

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have or be able to obtain a Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of employment

Responsibilities:

  • Undergraduate Advising - Approve and signs degree plans, course substitutions, add/drop, Q-drops, withdrawals, and changes of curriculum. Monitors degree requirements. Monitors student probationary terms as necessary. Advises students on probation. Refers students on academic preparation, time management, test anxiety, and study skills to other University resources; Responds to inquiries from students and parents. Interprets University and College rules and regulations, and policies and procedures. Advise and refer students with respect to academic schedules, course schedules, course planning and selections, or related personal concerns and determine possible courses of action. Advise or refer students with questions regarding readmission, professional, academic, housing, student services, degree programs, major options, financial aid, career and educational goals.

  • New Student Conferences - Uses BANNER/COMPASS for student registration, degree audit, course prerequisites, transfer equivalencies, withdrawals, Q-drop processing, etc. Participates in New Freshmen and Transfer orientations and conferences and registers students during New Student Conferences. Maintains records and student contacts.

  • Assessment of Program - Assists with implementation and oversight of undergraduate special programs, including retention learning, communities and honors. Assists with assessment of developed programs, including keeping statistical data and yearly reporting.

  • Retention Efforts - Participates in oversight of specific functions, including the direction of support personnel to accomplish those functions.Fosters retention of identified groups of students through activities such as mentoring, monitoring of student grades, and other support programs; implements projects to achieve specific activities or outcomes. Interacts with college and other University offices regarding admissions, registration, advising and counseling; develops and revises informational materials, handbooks and newsletters for students and departments.

  • Recruitment - Provide academic advice to undergraduate students, prospective students, and their parents.Travel to high schools to present and distribute information concerning University programs and opportunities. This may require driving of a personal or University vehicle. Advise or refer students with questions regarding admission, readmission, professional, academic, housing, student services, degree programs, major options, financial aid, career and educational goals. Serves to facilitate the application and admission of students; Participate in University/college recruiting activities; meets with prospective students. Develops contacts with high school and community college teachers, counselors and administrators as a mechanism for identifying students for recruitment. Performs other duties as assigned.
