The Academic Advisor II is responsible for serving as an advisor for students in the Department of Political Science. The advisor will assist in recruiting and advising students concerning their educational or career goals, academic requirements, and related personal concerns; providing information on and possible referral of students to University resources as needed to assist in meeting needs or solving problems. Salary Range: $35,568 - $42,868.80 (compensation based on hire's experience)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Two years of experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

  • Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits

  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely

  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills

  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people and be helpful, respectful, approachable, and team oriented

  • Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of COMPASS

Responsibilities:

  • PROSPECTIVE & NEW STUDENT ADVISING - Meets with incoming Political Science majors during new student conferences. Coordinates conference information with the dean’s office and manager to facilitate departmental tasks at each conference. Provides information and resources to prospective undergraduate students, parents, and other university officials. Attends college and university recruiting events and programs; meets with readmitted students to facilitate re-entry into the university and create a degree plan. Assists with various recruiting efforts set by the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Political Science.

  • ADVISING PROCESSES IN POLITICAL SCIENCE - Delivers academic advice to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Political Science to include the following areas: college admission/readmission, internal and external transfers into Political Science, professional concerns, housing, financial aid, student services, degree programs, academic schedules, study abroad opportunities, course planning and selection, educational and career goals; advises students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns and determines possible courses of action; reviews degree plans with students; processes add/drop, Q drops, withdrawal questions, change of curriculum, course substitutions; approve and sign no grade drops, no record drops; approves, establishes, and monitors student probationary terms as necessary; advises students on academic preparation, time management, test anxiety and study skills; refers students to University resources for students with disabilities, writing assistance, and counseling; uses Student Success Collaborative and Compass for checking student records and processing changes. Reviews and approves degree plans submitted through the Student Degree Planner system for undergraduate students.

  • ACADEMIC ADVISING DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE - Coordinates departmental advising and other services to current and prospective undergraduate students, family members and other clients including University administrators and resource providers; works to improve academic advising services, to enhance retention and graduation rates, to provide exceptional experiences for undergraduate students, and to develop community within and a lifelong affinity for the Department of Political Science and the College of Liberal Arts. Performs other duties as assigned.
