What we want

The Academic Advisor II, is responsible for serving as an advisor for students in the Department of Communication. The advisor will assist in recruiting and advising students concerning their educational or career goals, academic requirements, and related personal concerns; providing information on and possible referral of students to University resources as needed to assist in meeting needs or solving problems. The advisor will help develop or oversee academic related projects within the department. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications
  • Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people and be helpful, respectful, approachable, and team oriented
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • May require occasional evening and/or weekend hours

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, or general subject area of placement
  • Experience with TAMU policies and procedures
  • Experience with undergraduate degree programs in general subject area of placement
  • Experience with fostering involvement with high impact practices including study abroad, honors, internships, undergraduate research, and service-learning

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • NACADA or TEXAAN certificate of participation

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and problem-solving skills
  • COMPASS and HOWDY (or other Banner based system) proficiency

Responsibilities:

  • Advising Processes in Communication - Delivers academic advice to undergraduate students pursuing a degree, or minor, in the Department of Communication. Assists students in identifying courses that satisfy University, College, and Departmental graduation requirements; refers students to appropriate university resources for non-academic matters including but not limited to financial or personal concerns; reviews degree plans with students; processes add/drop, Q-drops, change of curriculum, course substitutions (Undergraduate Adjustment System); advises students on academic preparation; refers students to University resources for students with disabilities, writing assistance, and counseling; uses Compass for checking student records and processing changes. Reviews degree plans submitted through the Student Degree Planner system for undergraduate students.
  • Program Support for Academic Advising for Undergraduate Programming in Communication - Advises and supports undergraduate programming in collaboration with the Undergraduate Director and advising team in Communication. Assists COMM administrators in working with departmental faculty on recruiting, retention and graduation rates, and enhancing high impact practices; tracks student progress toward degree; supports programming for first generation students, and students on or near academic probation.
  • Program Support for High Impact Academic Advising – Department of Communication - Assists with advising for high impact practices which may include Study Abroad, Undergraduate Research, Internships, Leadership and Service; works to improve academic advising services to students to enhance retention and graduation rates, to provide exceptional experiences for undergraduate students, and to develop community within, and a lifelong affinity for, the Department of Communication, and the College of Liberal Arts.
  • Prospective and New Student Advising - Provides information and resources to prospective undergraduate students, their parents, and university officials about majors, minors, certificates and other programming offered by the Department of Communication. Attends college and university recruiting events and programs; meets with freshmen and transfer students during new student conferences and prospective student visits; meets with readmitted students to facilitate re-entry into the university and with creating a degree plan. Performs other duties as assigned.
