The School of Speech, Language, Hearing, and Occupational Sciences (SLHOS) invites applications for an Academic Advisor II. This position will supervise the day-to-day management of the academic advising functions of the SLHOS School and serves as the primary undergraduate academic advisor from the point of entry in education until the student completes the associated multiple degree and certificate programs we offer: Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders (BA CSD), Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Certificate, post-baccalaureate Leveling Certificate.


Required Skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interprofessional skills.Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to learn detailed undergraduate curricula in SLHOS, the College of Health, University of Montana General Education curriculum, and graduation requirements.
  • Ability to advise students regarding a myriad of issues including course selection, withdrawals, appeals, and reinstatements.
  • Ability to identify appropriate support services such as tutoring and counseling.
  • Ability to collaborate on projects and handle conflict in a professional manner.
  • Ability to forge and foster a professional relationship with academic department chairs and advocate for students when appropriate.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent professional and personable demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain sensitivity and respect for cultural, linguistic, and neurocognitive differences.
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently to achieve goals and meet deadlines in a work environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and administration.
  • Skills to gather, evaluate, and report data. Ability to keep all information in software systems up to date.

Minimum Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with academic advising.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in academic advising
  • Knowledge of the University of Montana and the College of Health
  • Knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA compliance laws.
  • Knowledge of University of Montana Advising software.
  • Experience working with “at risk” student populations.

Position Details

Work Schedule:                 Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary:                                $19.03/hr.  Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period:        Six months minimum
