• Experience advising, teaching, or counseling students.
• Experience using workplace technology or educational platforms (Outlook, Excel, Canvas, Navigate, Workday).


Job Description:

Summary
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences assigns academic advisors to curricular based Units (Biological & Physical Sciences, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences, Communication, Humanities, or Open Option).  Advisors work as part of the unit team and may advise multiple majors within their unit.  Two academic advisors are being hired to advise majors in the humanities, communications, and natural sciences. 

Successful candidates will: 

• Bring a student-centered lens to advising and have a preference for collaboration. 

• Have experience teaching, advising, or counseling diverse populations in one-on-one and group meetings. 

• Possess excellent communication, organizations, leadership, and time management skills.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.  


Example of Duties

• Advises students on degree planning, academic support services, academic policy issues, graduation requirements 

• Refers students to appropriate resources such as counseling, academic success, financial aid, faculty etc. 

• May coordinate or assist with a learning community including hiring/training/supervising peer mentors and teaching orientation course. 

• Participates in recruitment activities- may include: individual and group visits, emails, phone calls.  Assists with new student orientation programming 

• Assist students in development of career goals in collaboration with faculty and career services professionals. 

• Participate in college retention initiatives 

• Serve on departmental committees including advisory role on curriculum committees 

Level Guidelines
• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals
• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues
• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems
• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests
• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff
• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity
• Provides guidance to students
