Job Description:

The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University is seeking an Academic Advisor II who will advise undergraduate Agricultural Engineering and Biological Systems Engineering students in all academic matters. They will advise students concerning degree planning, academic support services, academic policy issues, graduation requirements and other academic areas that support student success. They will also support departmental events focused on students, including but not limited to orientation, networking, and graduation. The Academic Advisor will provide referrals to resources for well-being and support, including counseling, academic success, and financial aid. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as academic advisor for Agricultural Engineering (AE) and Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) students. Advise other ABE and TSM students as assigned, assisting students in making personal education decisions and meeting graduation requirements including course selection.

  • Interpret academic policies and procedures to support student success.

  • Co-teach orientation courses (ENGR 101, ABE 102, ABE 110) and administer cooperative education course (ABE 398).

  • Serve as a representative to and support departmental and college committees and other organized efforts.

  • Coordinate and lead activities related to prospective student events such as Experience Iowa State, student visit days, transfer student events, and other departmental college and university orientation, recruitment and retention activities.

  • Assist with implementation of the undergraduate communication plan, including creation of digital and social media communication materials and an active e-recruiting/retention program for pre-collegiate and undergraduate students.

  • Advise and support the ABE Engineering learning community.

  • Coordinate data collection, analysis and reporting for undergraduate assessment activities in conjunction with the Associate Department Chair for Teaching and the College Student Services Unit.

  • Travel as needed to represent ABE student services at recruitment events.

The successful candidate will have excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage a diverse list of tasks.  They will function both independently and with an established and functional 3-person advising team and be able to make and justify decision choices to students and other stakeholders. The candidate will communicate effectively in writing, presentation, and public speaking and will work with a diverse population. They will maintain confidentiality on matters which may involve faculty, staff, and students.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
