HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Academic Advisor II position will complete all duties of a full-service professional academic advisor and will be tasked with performing academic advisement functions such as facilitating academic program development, advising, interpretation, and implementation of university policies and procedures. The Academic Advisor II will provide administrative support to department undergraduate directors as it relates to course substitutions, petitions, and permissions. The Academic Advisor II will also support undergraduate directors with advisement-related events and advisement data needs from Navigate. Academic Advisor II will be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Banner, and have experience with programs similar to Argos, Degree Works, Navigate, and more.

 

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Academic Advisor II are the following:

  • Advises prospective and current students about academic requirements and selection of courses.
  • Disseminate information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc.
  • Maintains students' files updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.
  • Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academic exclusion and financial aid reinstatements
  • Provides retention services for students who are part of the Academic Improvement Program.
  • Monitors and tracks the retention, progression, and graduation of all students within the assigned population.
  • Audits student records for curriculum, major, and graduation requirements. Evaluate and determine transfer credits
  • Research course descriptions to determine transferability.
  • Compares transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements and advises students on appropriate actions. 
  • Refers students with academic discrepancies to proper officials for further action.    
  • Monitors student registration activities and academic performance/progress.
  • Coordinates communications with students regarding course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources, etc.
  • Review course adjustment forms and petitions for readmission of students.
  • Serves as undergraduate advisor for the College of the Arts.
  • Mentors Academic Advisor I and UAC COTA advisors.
  • Coordinates training for new COTA advisors on DegreeWorks, best practices, and advisement responsibilities.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and review of College and University training advisement materials and programming.
  • Coordinates special programs or functions such as dual degree, BIS, Teacher Ed, Graduation, Petitions, appeals, grade appeals, etc.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in planning orientation or group advisement sessions – New Student Orientation, Transfer Orientations, etc.
  • Participates regularly in university, college, and advisement training, development, and planning meetings and activities. 
  • Participates in college, departmental, and other meetings related to undergraduate programs.
  • Assists in the preparation of special reports relating to enrollment and related matters.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

: 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and either 1) 6 months experience as “Academic Advisor I” at GSU (University Advisement Center or other GSU advising department) or 2) three years of related experience or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Requirements:

  • Knowledge of and experience with Banner, Degree Works, Argos, CAMPUS/EAB.
