Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking an Academic Advisor! Working under the direction of the Director of the TRIO Pre-College Programs, the academic advisor advises current and prospective program students through in-person, online, and telephone appointments. The advisor works with students to create Personalized Education Plans (PEP) and counsels them in general academic majors and general education courses. The advisor maintains knowledge of state high school requirements and CTE pathways. Assists with major and career exploration. The advisor provides proactive outreach to students. Other duties include maintaining records, interpreting test scores, presenting at internal and external meetings as assigned, and encouraging students to take concurrent enrollment classes.


Summary of Responsibilities

  • Advising. Advises and supports program students including first-generation and low-income, students Advises current and prospective program students in aspects of Concurrent Enrollment, including admissions, registration, pathways, university processes, and campus engagement. Counsels students in the development of educational plans, career and major exploration, and course selections that align with student goals. Interprets academic test scores and assists students with appropriate course placement. Counsels students who are in academic difficulty and helps facilitate progress. Documents and maintains student advising records. Consults with faculty and staff to document program changes. Ensures students receive up-to-date and accurate information concerning changes, assessment guidelines, course and instructor information, transfer guidelines, scholarships, and transition.
  • Advises and supports Program 12th-grade students including First Gen & Low-income, in connecting to educational opportunities, applying for colleges, scholarships, and FAFSA submission and completion.
  • Audits student records for curriculum, major, and graduation requirements. Monitors risk trends over time, tracks student performance and progression toward graduation and guides students to needed interventions. student graduation progress. Advises students regarding major fit and identifies students in need of additional support or proactive intervention.
  • Maintains a caseload of incoming and continuing program students. Recruits students into the program. Maintains student records using computer applications relevant to file maintenance and organization of caseload. Assists students with course planning to help them meet their educational and career goals. Assists students with the enrollment and registration process.
  • Coordinates the preparation and submission of various reports, including Monthly Time Reports, Activity and Counseling Reports, and Project Status Reports. Assist in preparing APR (annual performance report)
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications


Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree plus one year of experience related to Summary of Duties totaling five years.


Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

Knowledge of student advisement and recruitment. Knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and e-mail.- Skill in records management. Skill in public relations.- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to work with a diverse group and/or individuals.
