Job Summary

The Academic Advisor I is responsible for providing academic advice to undergraduate students through coordination with Academic Departments. Each Academic Department will liaise with the Office of Academic Enhancement through the Academic Advisor I to provide advice to undergraduate students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides academic advice and guidance to students. Provides input on probationary status decisions. 
  • Reviews academic records and test scores on file for course recommendations. Monitors student progress and degree requirements. Verifies completion of degree requirements.  Reviews and provides input on scholarship applications.
  • Answers inquiries and provides information to prospective students, students, and parents. Meets with and refers students to available resources and departments. Assists students with adds/drops, withdrawals, and changes of curriculum. Maintains records of student contacts.
  • Creates and gives presentations about the University to visiting groups.  Develops and presents training materials and programs.  Participates in events, activities, and programs. Assists with coordination of special initiatives. Assists with family visits and group tours. 
  • Provides leadership for faculty advisors on academic advising-related activities.  Prepares academic and advising reports.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education – Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of – Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits.
  • Ability to – Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

15%; New Student Intake
Coordinates with designated academic departments to provide Intake advising to incoming undergraduate students. This includes providing critical information to students, ensuring appropriate Initial course registration, and assisting with any needs from the point of admission through new student orlentatlon(s), and until the student is transitioned to a departmental advisor.

20%: First Year Advising
Provides curriculum advising for undergraduate students in the first year. Liaise with designated academic departments to provide academic advising to first year students. This includes providing curriculum advice, connecting students to campus resources, and ensuring students have the foundational information and skills to navigate the Institution and their degree program.

50%: Academic Coaching
Assists students In need of academic remediation in one-on-one or group settings. Includes the development of indivlduallzed academic success plans, referrals to appropriate resources for assistance with academic preparation and content support, test anxiety, study skills, etc. Has knowledge of University and college policies and procedures.

10%: Referral
Refer Incoming and current students in areas concerning degree programs, developmental education courses, academic schedules, course schedules, credit by examination, course planning and selections, and major options,

5%: Other
Performs other duties as assigned.
