Position Details


General Statement
Academic Advising Services include advising students regarding course and program choices, curriculum options, career advising, GFC MSU policies and procedures, referral to internal and external resources, academic planning to graduation, financial aid and academic appeals, communicating repercussions of student academic decisions, and other academic needs. Advisors also provide regular coaching to new students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Academic Advising
• Regularly advise students as to what courses to take each semester
• Disseminate current information about academic programs.
• Recommend appropriate courses and course load based on students’ academic ability, personal obligations and career goals.
• Complete detailed plans of study for all students including new, transfer and returning students prior to registration.
Career Advising
• Assist students with choosing an appropriate major though major and career exploration activities.
Retention
• Utilize a proactive academic advising approach to assist students on academic probation and at-risk of failing.
• Recognize different types of crises and refer students to campus/community resources as deemed appropriate.
Orientation/Registration
• Assist with providing orientation and registration to new students.
• Work with prospective students in cases where transfer credit is involved and a preliminary review of remaining coursework might help the prospect to matriculate.
Administrative
• Develop and maintain a current file for each student that includes their academic plan.
• Audit graduation requirements for students seeking degrees for graduation.
• Provide support for other Student Services functions (basic Financial Aid questions, Admissions policies and procedures, and Registrar forms, policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
• An earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in counseling, human services, or related field required or equivalent experience.
•Demonstrated ability to communicate well with a wide range of student populations, i.e. students of different ages, abilities, interests, backgrounds, needs, etc.;
•Ability to mentor students and assist them in problem solving and developing problem solving skills;
• Excellent writing, interpersonal communication skills;
• Ability to work independently, relate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization;
• Proficient in the use of MS-Office suite, especially Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint;
• Experience working in a postsecondary educational setting or an education-related field;
• Working knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of educational advisement;
• Knowledge of the typical problems encountered by students in selecting a course of study and in successfully preparing a plan of study to guide them to graduation; and
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and administrators.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
• Experience at a two-year or community college; and
• Knowledge of and experience working with SCT Banner.
• Experience making presentations to and fielding questions from groups.
