Job Description Summary:
GW’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) is the largest undergraduate school on campus and home to the liberal arts. The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Academic Advising Office empowers students to make intentional, informed decisions in pursuit of their academic, professional, and personal goals. The Academic Advisor introduces strategies to foster personal and academic success in a welcoming, supportive environment that values each student’s experiences, identities, and strengths. The Academic Advisor will also serve within an advising POD and provide students with general CCAS advising as well as serve as a liaison between the advising office and special student populations (e.g., transfer students, first-generation students, etc).
This entry-level position provides integral academic support and direction for students navigating their academic journey. This position serves as an information hub for students and provides internal and external resources and opportunities for student development. This position assists students with navigating transitions, exploring options, overcoming challenges, and developing academic plans by individual appointments and group sessions. In this role, the Academic Advisor has knowledge and understanding of GW rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and academic curriculum, tracks and manages student records, develops, maintains, and enhances internal projects that further student success, and enhances programming for specific student populations to foster and support students’ individual/specific needs and goals. This position supports events such as orientation and graduation, maintains student records from matriculation to graduation, and monitors and responds to student inquiries for transfer credit, leave of absence, and registration.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Academic advisors are expected to track and manage student records through both paper and electronic means and are encouraged to participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities to continue the flow of ideas and learning to strengthen the team.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance internal projects that further student success and advisor accessibility.
  • Academic Advisors are also expected to participate in “all hands on deck” events such as new student orientation, graduation, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
