Position Highlights

The Department of Mathematics is seeking candidates for the position of Academic Advising Professional I. This position will support undergraduate majors and minors in Mathematics and Statistics & Data Science.

The Academic Advisor is a critical member of the Math Center team, providing service and support to over 500 majors and 600 minors. The Academic Advisor is also a member of a vibrant and diverse group of more than 40 Math Department staff members. Academic advisors serve as frontline contacts for undergraduate students and help them choose degree programs, select courses, and define/refine their interests, as well as refer students to the appropriate faculty members for details on specific courses and for fuurther discussions of individual reserch and career interests. In addition, they inform students of scholarship and researh opportunities, and provide counsel in response to student concerns. This position will be a primary point of contact for students to receive the most detailed, accurate, and personalized information on how to successfully complete one of the Department's degree programs. Departmental advisors and play an integral role in the annual New Majors Program, Undergraduate Awards & Poster Session, as well as Orientation programs for new First-Year and Transfer students.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assesses individual students' stage of development (academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.  
  • Supports students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.  Assists undergraudate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options.
  • Assists undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options.
  • Assists students in identifying appropriate educational and career options, helping to evaluate options, possible outcomes, and implications.  
  • Advises students on general education; identifies options for students to satisfy degree requirements; evalucates and makes recommendations on exceptions and adjustments to programs of study.  
  • Evaluates use of transfer credit and determines wheather degree requirements have been met.
  • Monitors students' academic progress, determines satisfactory progress toward degree, and assists students in developing a plan for completion of the program requirements.
  • Identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring, course offerings, workshops).
  • Advises students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.
  • Interprets and explains advising policies and proceedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of courrent Math Placement processes, and refers students to the Math Placement office as needed.
  • Using University systems, maintains student files and records including advisors' notes.
  • Assists students in exploring research opportunities and scholarships.
  • Collaborates with Math Center and other staff to plan, develop, and present student support programming (workshops, informational sessions, webinars, etc.) and regular department/college events (new student, transfer, and international student orientations, meet your major fair, recruitment, student visits, new major program, convocation). 
  • Additional duties may be assigned by the Department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required. 
  • 1 year of relevant experience required.
  • Experience with word processing and spreadsheet software programs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to area of assignment.
  • Experience advising in higher education setting.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students.
