Purpose

To coordinate the Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy (MPA) Advising Office including oversight of staff, program implementation, external communications, data collection, and outcome assessment, reports, and accountability for meeting program objectives, or to manage more complex academic advising activities. To advance our core mission of fostering wellness, belonging, and success for all students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide and oversee advising services offered by the MPA Advising Office: Provide academic advising to assigned students, within the context of an advising relationship, accurately and respectfully communicating the requirements and academic options relevant to a particular student in a way that fits their particular needs; assist other students who take courses in the Mathematics, Physics, & Astronomy departments, answering questions and making referrals; engage in ongoing assessment of MPA advising services and devise more effective methods as needed; implement and manage academic advising programs including small learning cohorts; coordinate with Faculty Advisors to determine availability for student meetings, facilitate the petition process, and request input on various issues.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate advising center staff: Review applicants for MPA Advising Center job openings and use an unbiased method of selecting candidates to be interviewed; create interview questions that will be used for all candidates applying for a particular position; conduct interviews with at least one other staff member from the MPA Advising Center; provide thorough training via online training materials, in-person meetings, and required observation of advising sessions; evaluate staff on a regular basis and provide additional training as needed
  • Coordinate procedures that assist the Department of Mathematics, course management issues including seat demand, registration issues, and late adds at the beginning of each semester: work closely with Math Faculty Advisor, Department Coordinator, and others to identify concerns and academic needs amongst our math students and students taking mathematics courses and how to address these; create and continue to improve special registration processes such as those used to take honors courses, conference courses, and graduate math courses; manage processes by which students gain access to and are added to math courses after they can no longer add themselves.
  • Collaborate with other advising centers and offices across campus: forge practical solutions to complex problems; accumulate and disseminate academic information; interact with faculty, students, and parents in the coordination of academic advising functions; make internal transfer decisions for students who want to pursue a major in mathematics, physics, or astronomy.
  • Other duties as assigned, including supporting special projects and staffing events within CNS.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and eight years of experience working with college students or in an academic counseling capacity or Master's degree and six years of experience or Doctoral degree and four years of experience.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

Prior supervisory experience. 5+ years’ experience in a student-facing or advising position at UT Austin. Knowledge of CNS policies, procedures and degree plans, or experience at the University of Texas at Austin working with student populations or in an advising area. Experience overseeing small community groups of students. Program management experience.


Salary Range

$60,000


Working Conditions

Hybrid work is allowed on a case-by-case basis. Student facing staff are expected to work on campus a minimum of three days a week in a standard work week.
