Job Summary

Department Purpose

The Office of Educational Opportunity and Enrichment Services houses a family of programs, services and centers designed to support student learning, enhance the student experience, and foster strong communities where students feel empowered to achieve their goals. Transition assistance, support services and co-curricular opportunities are offered to all students along with specialized support geared toward various diverse student communities. Programs and centers include First-year Aggie Connections; Educational Opportunity Program; Guardian Scholars Program; Davis Underground Scholars Program; Success Coaching and Learning Strategies; Transfer Reentry Center; TRiO Scholars Program; Veterans Success Center; and Pre-Graduate/Law Advising. The department employs over 80 students as peer advisors and mentors, coaches, and program assistants. The Center for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) provides support services to UC Davis students from first-generation and historically low-income households. These services include academic guidance, advocacy, community connections, financial resources, and leadership development.

Job Summary

Under the close supervision of the Assistant Director of the Center for the Educational Opportunity Program, this position will provide individualized holistic advising and counseling services that support the persistence, academic success, retention, and graduation of undergraduate students from first-generation and historically low-income households. This position will coordinate the Arturo González Pre-Law Academy, help assign EOP students into academic cohorts in the Special Transitional Enrichment Program (STEP), and provide holistic advising and programming throughout the academic year. This position will also provide general administrative and programming support to the wider Office of Educational Opportunity and Enrichment Services (OEOES) unit, as requested.

The incumbent collaborates with EOP staff to perform a full range of duties for student academic achievement and retention advising services and programs for students from first-generation and historically low-income households.

The incumbent applies student development theory and applies multicultural academic counseling across disciplines and colleges; monitors student academic progress; analyzes and assesses students’ goals, problems, and needs; conducts follow-up and outreach programs; and advocates on behalf of students’ concerns.

Additional responsibilities include supporting the planning and implementation of the Special Transitional Enrichment Program (STEP); marketing EOP student retention programs and services; teaching student success workshops, seminars, and developing transitional success curriculum; and liaising with academic departments, faculty, and community organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited university or an equivalent combination of education and comparable experience.
  • Experience providing intercultural holistic advising across disciplines to students who identify as first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, and/or from non-traditional backgrounds.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Knowledge of theories and practice of counseling, learning, human, and career development, along with an understanding of the methodologies used to enhance student learning and achievement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:           

  • Experience assessing student needs and referring to specific student programs or centers (i.e., financial aid, academic college, disability center, career center).
  • Experience delivering professional academic programs to students that enhance academic success in one-on-one, small, and large group settings (i.e., study skills, test preparation, test taking strategies, major and career exploration, and post-graduation opportunities)
  • Experience applying and administering intake, assessment, and evaluation tools to a broad range of students with varying learning needs and levels of academic preparedness, coupled with familiarity with research methodologies and research designs.
  • Knowledge of and experience assisting students with personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, time management, goal setting, test taking, self-esteem, clarification of values, career choices, and leadership.
  • Skills and experience in developing, planning, administering student transition and retention programs.
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience in judgment, analyzing problems, decision-making, conflict management, and identifying solutions.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Written and oral communication skills including the ability to make effective group presentations, describe programs, and provide information with clarity.
  • Skills to use technology tools such as word-processing, databases, applications, student information systems, Web-based programs, including social media, that typically underpin and support program efforts and improve efficiency of systems and processes.
  • Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
