Ablebodied Seaman, under general supervision, works as a watch stander and/or day worker in the deck department. Responsibilities include performing general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of areas and equipment within the purview of the deck department. What you need to know

Please Note:  The selected applicant must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University's random drug testing plan for drugs and Alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1). Must be able to sail during all designated underway periods, including training crises aboard the training ship and present for shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma/GED or any equivalent combination of training and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • KSA to operate a ship deck department maintenance program

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Active AB Special license or greater; U.S. Coast Guard approved Adult CPR, basic First Aid (First Aid must have been within the last 12 months and the CPR must be current.); TWIC; Qualified Lifeboat man; STCW with RFPNW endorsement; Current USCG Medical Certification.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • At least one year of experience, post ablebodied seaman certification. Ocean Unlimited experience

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge & skills required to maintain a training & maintenance program for deck cadets on the TS Kennedy under the supervision of the Boatswain, Deck Mate & Chief Mate

  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects and exert moderate force

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • USCG Chief Mate or Master License – Oceans

  • STCW VI/2 Proficient in Fast Rescue Boat

  • VSO Endorsement

Responsibilities

  • STANDS WATCH - Stands wheel, anchor, and gangway watches as directed, maintaining alertness at all times. During a wheel watch must maintain a steady course, properly execute all rudder orders and communicate utilizing navigational terms relating to heading and steering.

  • DECK - DAY OPERATIONS - Serves as a day worker on deck. Performs general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas in the deck department. Performs maintenance such as chipping, scraping, soundings, priming, painting and/or cleaning of the ship’s hull, decks, superstructure, cargo gear, smoke stack, lifeboats, rescue boats and/or life rafts, and emergency and damage control gear.

  • SAFETY AND OTHER - Is responsible for learning the location and use of emergency equipment, lifesaving equipment, damage control equipment, and safely equipment. Performs all operations connected with the launching of life saving equipment and makes security inspections of the ships. Performs other duties as assigned.
