The Office of Engagement and Extension (OEE) was organized in 2006 to advance CSU’s engagement and outreach missions. In addition to CSU Extension, OEE includes CSU Extended Campus (including CSU Online), the Colorado Water Center, and a variety of vibrant programs that engage the teaching, research, extension, and service missions of Colorado State University. The Vice President for Engagement and Extension (VPEE) is the principal administrative, academic, and fiscal officer for these divisions, reports to the CSU President, and works closely with the Provost/Executive Vice President. These divisions work collaboratively across all Colleges and offices on campus, and have strong engagement programs throughout Colorado, the Western US and globally. At any given time, OEE’s divisions include over 400 employees. The total of budgets for all divisions is approximately $85 million. OEE is one of the most institutionally comprehensive commitments to engagement and outreach among all land-grant and other universities. The Central Great Plains Resource Management Research (CGPRM) Unit in Akron, Colorado is part of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) with a mission “to enhance the economic and environmental well-being of agriculture by development of integrated cropping systems and technologies for maximum utilization of soil and water resources. Emphasizes on efficient use of plant nutrients, pesticides, and water and soil conservation/preservation.” The CGPRM unit’s interdisciplinary, ecosystem research promotes collaborations among disciplines and across fields of expertise with Colorado State University (CSU) and throughout the world.
The role of this position is critical because CSU, as a soft-money research institute, requires such support to provide essential funding for timely research that sustains CSU’s vital role in the research community both locally and across the globe.
Position Summary
This postdoctoral position will support research efforts related to dryland farming systems. The applicant will be part of a multidisciplinary team of multi-university and USDA-ARS collaborative consortium focused on soil health and nutrient dynamics assessments. A successful applicant should have familiarity with soil physical, chemical, and biological processes that influence soil health and crop production. This includes knowledge of aggregate stability and size distribution, phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA), enzyme activities, soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, and statistical analysis. The selected applicant will lead or contribute to projects that evaluate the effects of management decisions on overall soil health and land productivity in dryland cropping systems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work well in a team that includes interdisciplinary scientists, managers, and modelers. The candidate is expected to be fluent in statistics, spatial analysis, data analysis, and writing reports, such as refereed journal articles and extension publications. In addition, the candidate will assist and coordinate the work of laboratory assistants and high school students, and lead or assist in sampling research sites inside and outside Colorado.
This position is based in Akron, CO.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Completed PhD in soil ecology, conservation, agronomy, or related discipline.
  • Experience in statistical analyses.
  • Excellent computer skills and strong competency with SAS are needed.
  • The ability to travel to multiple sites outside Colorado for soil sampling and organizing the trip with the collaborated scientist at the study sites.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills, including high-quality presentations, and a strong commitment to produce timely, high-quality refereed journal publications.
  • Strong time-management skills and the ability to undertake several concurrent projects, tasks, and deadlines.
  • Ability to learn and adapt new procedures associated with soil health assessments that are important to the research objectives.
  • Familiarity with the current literature related to soil health in dryland systems.
  • Experience with data syntheses, diversity of statistical approaches, graphics, data tabulation, and field work.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with the interdisciplinary team and with partners, including federal agencies.
