Classification Title:

Education/Training Specialist I, Master Gardener Coordinator

Job Description:

Program Delivery:

Support the Urban Horticulture Agent goals and objectives for the volunteer program which reflect the Extension’s mission.
Collaborate with community partners to recruit MGVs reflecting county’s demographics.
Conduct annual orientation sessions for new recruits.
Review and restructure existing MGV Course.
Create new MGV training and educational materials, including newsletters, for continuous education in support of ongoing UF research.
Assist in evaluating training effectiveness in achieving learning outcomes via surveys.
Coordinate with Urban Horticulture Agent on annual MGV recognition event to support MGV ommunity.
Serve as primary point of contact for all volunteer requests via telephone, voice mail, email and written request and ensure a timely response.
Assist with event registration, program fees and collection of demographic data.
Develop and maintain complete and accurate records, including volunteer policies, procedures, position descriptions, standards of conduct and background checks.
Reporting:

Maintain individual MGV paper and electronic files, including volunteer service records, anniversary dates, years of service, annual agreements, volunteer service hours and continuing education hours.
Develop and provide monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on all individual and group volunteer activities, including number of volunteers and number of hours, programs, and in-kind contribution value of service. Work with Extension agent to develop new county and state reports as needed in response to volunteerism. Report annual MGV anniversaries, years of service.
Planning:

Assist the Urban Horticulture Agent in developing a written plan for live or virtual MGV meetings, events, and activities: Develop a plan for using committees to plan and organized various MGV events and activities. Plan, prepare and coordinate with Urban Horticulture Agent on lessons and materials and schedule speakers for educational outreach events. Annually, continue to improve knowledge of subject matter and teaching methods by attending in-service education. Support the Urban Horticulture agent to develop an urban horticulture speaker’s bureau guideline.
Management of Master Gardener Volunteer Community Projects:

Plan, coordinate and track annual MGV volunteer fair and mentorship in the community and schools. Review MGV safety protocols with MGVs and mentors. Maintain records and provide support for MGV community projects. Collaborate with Broward County parks, and community organizations to develop and maintain a comprehensive list of volunteer opportunities for MGVs.
Diagnostic Functions:

Collaborate with the Master Gardener Volunteer Program, Urban Horticulture Extension Agent, Horticulture Educational Training Specialist, Master Gardener Volunteers, and UF/IFAS Faculty to diagnose symptoms of plant disease, nutrient deficiencies, pests, and Florida-Friendly Landscaping inquiries. Formulate a response to resolve client problems and maintain supporting diagnostic records.
Travel:

Travel for educational events, trainings, or MGV Urban Community projects including driving to county, district, and state events. Complete Van Training.


Performs other duties as assigned.


Expected Salary:

$19.01-$22/hour, commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

Effective written and oral communication skills.
Experience working with diverse youth and adult audiences.
Skill in planning a variety of programs for the target audiences.
Knowledge of county and state policies and procedures.
Knowledge of Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles
Knowledge of the Master Gardener Volunteer Program
Knowledge of Volunteer Management
Knowledge of horticulture and related sciences including plant identification, pest management, plant diseases, plant, soil management and urban food systems
Ability to operate a computer and knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
Skills to manage Social Media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube)
Skill in analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.


Special Instructions to Applicants:

SUPERVISION


Verbal and written instructions for training purposes, program delivery, and procedural forms.  Additional instructions on an as-needed basis.  Must be able to work independently and in a team.  This position reports to the County Extension Director with daily activities assigned by Urban horticulture agent.

 

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW


Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position, for purposes to travel to county, district and state events and other duties assigned. Complete Van training. Background check and fingerprinting required.

PROGRAM DIRECTION AND DEVELOPMENT


Working with the urban horticulture Extension Agent, aligned with Florida-Friendly Landscaping ™ principles, utilizing PowerPoint presentations as needed.

MONETARY RESPONSIBILITY


Assist in collecting program registration fees and small program related purchases, including credit card payments.
