Communications Manager

Job Description:

Reporting to the TESI director, the communications manager is primarily responsible for the development, management and implementation of all aspects of TESI communications, digital outreach, and public relations. The communications manager will be responsible for both communicating science effectively and promoting TESI’s events, impacts and accomplishments to TESI intended audiences and stakeholders, which include:

(1) K-12 educators and students; (2) lifelong learners; (3) University of Florida students and faculty (4) policy and decision makers; and (5) other stakeholders.

The communications manager will know how to select appropriate communications media and messaging for these intended audiences and use key performance indicators to track efficacy and reach.

The communications manager will represent TESI in meetings and functions, either along with the director and other team members, or as the delegated representative of the Institute. The communications manager will be a self-starter, one who is both highly collaborative and works well in project teams, but also knows when and how to complete work on their own, as appropriate. Strong communications skills are essential, including proficiency in working with print, digital, and social media.

The communications manager will embrace the core values  of the museum, as well as those specific to TESI. The communications manager will actively promote a TESI team culture that is highly collaborative and values the expertise and contributions of all team members.

The communications manager will also network and collaborate with the broad UF community, which consists of more than 50 academic departments, centers and institutes on communication and education projects related to Earth Systems science. They will also be a visible and active member of the UF communications community and other Earth systems-related academic units, agencies and stakeholders in Florida and beyond.

Duties include:

  • Lead the planning, development, and evaluation of content and media for internal and external publication and dissemination. This includes social media, press releases about Institute work, TESI website content, educational videos, Institute newsletters, annual reports, and more.
  • Ensure TESI website is up-do-date with relevant news and information and follows accessibility guidelines.
  • Serve as an editor, proofreading content for clarity, accuracy, content, and adherence to institutional brand standards.
  • Actively implement and promote the TESI brand and public image. Work with TESI team members to develop materials for cohesive branding and consistent messaging.
  • Create, implement, and evaluate communications programs and campaigns that promote TESI’s mission.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the Institute’s annual communications plan, in line with TESI’s strategic plan.
  • Respond in a timely manner to requests for information from the media.
  • Work with other PR, marketing, and communications professionals in the Museum and at UF to optimize collaboration, activities, products, and impact.
  • Collaborate with the FLMNH’s Office of Museum Technology, to maintain and develop social media accounts, including content creation, curation, and active dissemination.
  • Assist with the development, promotion, and implementation of public outreach events.
  • Collaboratively manage all aspects of the TESI Environmental Communicators Internship . This includes developing content calendars for students, providing day-to-day supervision of interns, providing hands on editing and mentorship to guide student work, and providing relevant professional development opportunities for interns.
  • Provide supervision and mentorship to TESI graduate assistants.
  • Assist with the development of grant proposals.
  • Other duties as needed.

Expected Salary:

$60,500-$65,000; Commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • The communications manager will understand and/or have training in environmental science or topics.
  • Previous experience communicating scientific concepts to broad audiences.
  • Attention to detail and ability to produce work that is error free and factual.
  • Proficiency with developing and managing social media.
  • Experience in project management and coordination. Must be able to manage several projects at once with competing deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, WordPress, or other online content management systems.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students as a mentor or supervisor.
  • Proficiency with digital photography and videography and photo/video editing.
  • Must be proficient in the English language with excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels.
