The Jefferson County Extension office, along with this position, is staffed by a county director/agent; two 4-H youth development agents; a family and consumer sciences agent; a natural resources agent; two horticulture program associates; two 4-H program coordinators; a Family Leadership Training Institute coordinator; and three support staff.

Position Summary
The Extension Program Coordinator for the National Mentoring Program (NMP) supports, facilitates, and organizes the mentoring program for 60 youth at three sites in Jefferson County. This is a grant-funded part-time (20 hours per week) position. The key responsibilities of this position include recruiting and retention of at-risk youth to participate in the 4-H National Mentoring Program; providing a community-based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education programs with a caring adult mentor to serve at-risk youth populations with the goals of increasing youth social competency, family relationships and academic success. This youth mentoring program focuses on instruction in emerging technologies to learn basic life skills and ready themselves for the workforces. Additionally, it provides mentors with an opportunity for community engagement.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Completed High School Diploma (or GED).
  • Two years of demonstrated experience working with youth in a school setting, community center, recreation center, or comparable setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in recruiting and training volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations.
  • Demonstrated use of technology in collecting data for reports.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Associate degree in education.
  • Experience with mentoring programs including experience with volunteer recruitment and training.
  • Knowledge of Extension and the Land Grant University System.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility
  • Partner with school administrators at three sites in Jefferson County to identify the youth mentor audience.
  • Responsible for conducting daily tasks such as ongoing marketing of the program and delivering information to school administrators, mentors, mentees, and the mentee’s family members.
  • Gather program data and information for federal reports.
  • Responsible for reporting mentoring activities and needed materials/supplies.
  • Facilitate weekly programming activities lasting a minimum of one hour, Family Night Out meetings, mentor orientation, and quarterly mentor meetings.

  • Responsible for mentor recruitment, training, matching, and retention.
  • Provide ongoing training and support to volunteer mentors, in accordance with grant requirements.
  • Maintain effective communication with Colorado State University personnel, community leaders, and other agencies/organization to enhance strong program development, delivery, and evaluation.

  • Serve as the main contact for the mentors, mentees, and the mentee’s family members. 
  • Develop and maintain a strong working relationship with administrators from the three sites where the program is implemented.
