What we want

The Information Technology (IT) Network Architect (5G Architect) will have a primary focus for implementing 5G technology applications and a 5G managed services portfolio. This position will work with the networking and telecommunications teams to design and implement a best-in-class 5G network environment to support TAMU customers. The 5G Architect will identify 5G technology solutions to improve mission capabilities. The 5G Architect will establish best practices for 5G networks and leverage existing infrastructure to support and expand the 5G network. The 5G Architect will work with researchers to deploy 5G innovations, mobile edge compute (MEC), and 5G Applications as well as guiding and influencing partnerships across the TAMU System.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten years of related experience in network engineering, routing and switching, wireless projects, network protocols, encryption, topologies, network security, overall system integration/convergence, and/or video and data convergence, integrating systems in multi-user, multiplatform, and multitasking operating system environments.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment.

  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people. 
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills. 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Six or more years of experience working in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) field with responsibilities in operations and service life cycle management delivery.
  • Broad understanding of 5G networks and applications.
  • Working level experience with 5G applications including Core/RAN, Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC), cloud computing, and Radio Access Network (RAN).
  • Strong experience and solid understanding of LTE/5G wireless systems design, RF theory/design, and firmware architecture.
  • Experience in ITSM/CRM (ServiceNow or equivalent) platform and operations model planning, design implementation and continuous improvement disciplines.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • ITIL/ITSM (Practitioner or above), PMP, Network Certifications (CCIE a plus), JNCIE.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced understanding of LTE, 4G, and 5G mobile network technologies and applications.
  • Extensive understanding of 5G Core solutions, architecture, and security. In-depth knowledge on mobile networks, especially on 3GPP LTE 4G and 5G standards in RAN and the interface between radio network and core network.
  • Additional knowledge on the core network standards is a plus.
  • Skills in strategic thinking, research, and planning to include: creativity/innovation, design theory, advanced systems theory, project portfolio management, strategic change management, risk management, strategic disaster recovery & business continuity, ROI analysis, integrating solutions, leveraging strategic resources, strategic partnering, conflict management, advanced change management.
  • Strategic technical expertise to include, developing discipline specific expertise in others, enterprise-level policies, and advanced technology research and design skills.
  • Strategic industry related skills to include, in-depth knowledge of the global IT industry and trends, advanced knowledge of IT security regulations, and advanced knowledge of current and emerging IT industry issues and trends.

Responsibilities:

  • Emerging Technologies - Reviews emerging 5G network (data and voice) technologies, tools, products, and services. Oversees the selection of process for the acquisition of these technologies, tools, products, and services.
  • Research - Conducts research, development, and business assessment of new emerging network products, market trends, and industry knowledge. Works with vendors to implements labs for new networking technologies (PoC), pilots, and prepares white papers and documentation of PoC results, recommendations, and operational support. Works with the networking and telecommunications teams to design and implement a best-in-class 5G network environment to support TAMU customers. Works with researchers to deploy 5G innovations, mobile edge compute (MEC), and 5G Applications as well as guiding and influencing partnerships across the TAMU System.
  • Network Framework - Implements 5G technology applications and a 5G managed services portfolio. Implements and establishes 5G network framework by defining principles, best practices, and standards.
  • Cost/Vendor Analysis - Develops cost analysis models and vendor comparisons for large scale projects to ensure cost effective and efficient operations. Measures feasibility of various networking (including convergence) approaches.
  • Business Analysis - Meets with IT stakeholders to gather business requirements and their implications on networking solutions.
  • Application Infrastructures - Participates in creating necessary and appropriate application infrastructures for IT solutions. Identifies 5G technology solutions to improve mission capabilities.
  • Application Security - Participates in ensuring that applications are appropriately secured.
  • Professional Development - Participates in training and professional development with special emphasis on leadership development, industry/technology related acumen, and project/operations management. Perform other duties as assigned.
