The State 4-H Youth Development Office is located on CSU’s campus in the Extension Administration Office in the University Square Building. 4-H grows young people with essential life skills like confidence, courage, resiliency, and curiosity who are empowered and prepared for life today and tomorrow. What began as a way to give rural youth new agricultural skills has grown into America’s largest youth development organization. Colorado 4-H serves youth and communities through school enrichment, special interest, after-school, camping, and club programs. 4-H Youth Development mission areas include Healthy Living, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and Agriculture, Civic Engagement and Leadership. Position Summary
Based out of the Western Regional office in Grand Junction, the Extension Regional Specialist for 4-H Youth Development provides guidance, support, and educational opportunities for county and regional programs in the areas of 4-H and K-12 (after-school and school enrichment) youth development. Examples of 4-H programs would be: livestock, shooting sports, and STEM and K-12 (after-school and school enrichment) program areas. This position is part of the CSU Extension 4-H Youth Development team with the goal to ensure that the 4-H mission and vision are achieved in the Western Region. The individual in this position will work as a member of the Colorado State 4-H Program team to support the delivery of educational efforts throughout the region under the guidance of the State 4-H Director, State 4-H Specialists and supervision of the Extension Regional Director of the Western Region.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Completed Master’s degree.
  • One degree must have been conferred in agricultural sciences, youth development, recreation, social sciences, education or a closely related field.
  • At least five (5) years of professional experience in building formal and/or informal educational programs, program delivery and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and success in working with diverse audiences; this may include but is not limited to persistent effort, intentional programming, community engagement, allocation of resources, and/or accountability for diversity outcomes.
  • Demonstrated skill working with people as individuals and in groups, ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations, and to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.
  • Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation, and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Extension and/or 4-H youth development experience.
  • Experience delivering educational programs in an after-school or other out-of-school setting.
  • Experience working in a K-12 public school setting and knowledge of K-12 educational standards.
  • Successful experience developing financial support for educational programs, including grant writing, fundraising, contracting or cost recovery efforts.
  • Livestock exhibition and/or youth shooting sports experience
  • Experience in personnel and program management.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish).

  • Provide regional leadership and strategic planning for 4-H and K-12 programming across all delivery modes.
  • Serve as a resource to implement Common Measures throughout the Western Region or other evaluation tools as implemented by Colorado 4-H.
  • Deliver informal teaching materials, seminars, workshops, meetings, and demonstrations to targeted audiences (county agents, adults and youth) and develop resources for county program success.
  • Develop and implement regional programming based off regional Community Needs Assessment and 4-H issue canvases.

  • Build collaborative relationships within the CSU community and other agencies and organizations in the 4-H and K-12 fields to advance these educational efforts.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Extension agents, 4-H specialists, and campus faculty, to plan, execute, and evaluate educational programs at county, regional and state levels in livestock, shooting sports, and STEM and after-school programs.
  • Collaborate with CSU and community partners on grants, contracts, and other funding to support STEM and after-school programs.
