At South Dakota State University (SDSU) our mission in South Dakota 4-H is to engage all youth in positive development with a vision of preparing youth to lead lives of possibility amidst the grand challenges of our time through experiential learning and mentoring relationships. We are looking to hire a people-centered, strong collaborator who is creative, innovative, interested in non-formal education, and committed to helping others grow and develop. This is a hands-on lead teaching position for education and youth development professionals. The selected individual will develop and teach educational programs both in school and out-of-school settings, manage volunteers, work with local stakeholders, and more. This position is located in Alexandria, South Dakota and is a 12-month, 100% time, and benefits eligible position. South Dakota 4‑H is a community that provides experiences for young people to learn by doing. Youth complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture, arts, citizenship, and others, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Young people experience 4‑H through in-school and after-school programs, school and community clubs and state 4-H opportunities. We recognize that the youth of today are our future leaders and what they learn and experience in 4-H will help them develop into contributing citizens who will give back to their communities in the future. Department Description and Cultural Expectations | COMMUNITY PROFILE Hanson County is located on the I-90 corridor and is a bedroom community of Mitchell, SD. The county has a population of about 3,400. The County is home to the Cities of Alexandria (County Seat) and Emery. The County also holds the towns of Farmer and Fulton. The county’s major industry is agriculture and is also supplemented seasonal by hunting and fishing tourism. The county has some shopping and dining options, and residents have ample opportunities in nearby Mitchell. Recreation includes community events in Hanson County and nearby Mitchell, hunting, fishing, and the nearby Lake Vermillion Recreation Area. The James River also runs through part of the county. The County has two school districts. The Hanson School District has one consolidated school building in Alexandria serving the high, middle, and elementary schools. Other schools in the district are located in Hutterite Colony communities. The Bridgewater-Emery School district covers portions of Hanson and McCook Counties with a school in Bridgewater and one in Emery. The closest hospital to Alexandria is located in Mitchell, SD. The closest regional hubs to Alexandria are the cities of Mitchell, SD (~15 miles West), Huron, SD (~65 miles North), and Yankton, SD (~70 miles South). The closest cities to Alexandria are Sioux Falls, SD (~60 miles East) and Sioux City, IA (~140 miles Southwest). |
