The Program Director is a full-time year round position scheduling, overseeing, and directing programs and program staff for Northeastern Ohio 4-H Camps, Inc., known as 4-H Camp Whitewood.

The Program Director is the point person for creating, improving, and ensuring excellent programming is delivered at Camp Whitewood. This person will plan, develop, review and update educational program materials including handbooks, program guides, promotional literature, exhibits, schedules, signage, etc. This includes, but is not limited to developing program opportunities, detailed program guides, equipment lists, and safety procedures. The Program Director will contribute regular articles to the camp newsletter and other camp publications and will pursue new clientele through promotions including online and social media. The Program Director will actively pursue grants, gifts and contracts to fund programming efforts. The Program Director will regularly observe programs and staff to ensure safety, quality and availability of program equipment. This person will evaluate all programs and will compile evaluations for each group; type and mail to each group leader and the Camp Board.

The Program Director will assist in promotion and development of camp programs, drive to workshops and training events and assist with camp-related promotions, serve as the liaison between program staff and user groups, will communicate with all camp directors and teachers prior to their camp visit for scheduling details, and will meet with group program leaders upon arrival to update needs and coordinate program requests. The Program Director will coordinate program needs for all groups including scheduling staff; inventory of equipment, returning emails and phone calls in a timely manner and will maintain communication between staff and clientele. This person will facilitate and/or delegate arrival and pre-camp check-in, orientation, coordinate schedules, check-out, and accommodate needs/concerns of clientele and will inform user groups of 4-H Camp Whitewood policies, guidelines, and traditions and enforce same.

The Program Director will assist in recruiting, hiring, and training of summer program staff and volunteers to conduct camp educational programming and support activities and will supervise program staff and volunteers in daily program responsibilities. They will also assist in evaluation of all program staff including formal and informal measures. The Program Director will order summer staff uniforms and items for the camp store and will supervise camp store operation including handling merchandise as delivered. Other duties include: scheduling store staff, collect camp store money, inventory sheets daily; and check figures against sales. The Program Director will also inventory health care supplies; maintain and replenish supplies, work with 4-H Camp Whitewood physician to keep standing orders current, recommend program supplies and equipment purchases and maintain inventory of these materials, and will order authorized supplies and equipment.

As a team player in running and improving programs, the Program Director must work closely with the Executive Director in all matters, plans, and/or problems. The Program Director will enforce policies and regulations for the safety and health of staff and clientele and will ensure that all programs are conducted in accordance with OSU Extension guidelines and ACA guidelines. This individual will keep their training current and stay informed about trends in education, camping (ACA) and recreation, will attend program workshops and seminars to keep informed of current trends in environmental education, and will maintain membership in American Camping Association and Environmental Education Council of Ohio (or similar entity mutually agreed upon with Executive Director). This individual will maintain records as requested by Executive Director, Camp Board of Trustees, the Ohio State University, ACA and others as implied or required by law.

The Program Director must communicate regularly with seasonal staff, county staff, board members and the Executive Director through meetings, personal conferences, written communications, and other means. The Program Director shall maintain the staff manual and job specifications, with input from the Executive Director, for each member of the summer staff to clearly define responsibilities. The Program Director monitors all areas of camp regularly to note progress and needs and will perform other duties as judgment and necessity may dictate.

Required Experience:

  • Be 21 years of age or older with a Valid Driver's License and
  • 2-3 years of overnight camp experience.
  • Obtained bachelor’s degree in outdoor education, parks and recreation or similar related field and/or extensive experience at programming in a camp situation.
  • Ability to plan, organize and conduct daily and special programs.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and group communication skills and the ability to develop effective collaborative working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, and clientele. Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize a computer for word processing, registration accounting, and e-mail communications.
  • Ability to supervise staff, interact with clientele and coordinate a team effort in delivery of camp services.
  • Possess effective individual and group teaching skills.
  • Possess positive character, integrity, adaptability, and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, carry, lift objects over 40 pounds, and willing to be exposed to the outdoors in all seasons.
  • Ability to work with diverse youth and adult populations.
  • Self-directed and goal oriented.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively with minimum supervision.
  • Willing to work flexible hours including evening and weekends.
  • Possess or willingness to obtain certifications in one or more of the following: ACA Canoe/kayak instructor, shooting sports instructor in one or more shooting sports disciplines: Archery, Rifle, Shotgun, Range Safety Officer.

  • 4 Seasons of Resident Camp experience
  • Leadership and training of programming staff. Designing, offering, and evaluating effective educational programming.

Location: The position is located at 4-H Camp Whitewood in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

Pay Range: The pay range for this job profile is $35,568 - $47,034. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications as presented in their application materials.
