Deadline: 24 Apr 2024

Classification Title:

Scripps Staff Scientist

Job Description:

Dr. Jason Yuan's laboratory seeks a skilled and motivated Staff Scientist to join its dynamic basic and translational research team specializing in lung vascular pathobiology, ion channel electrophysiology, membrane receptors and intracellular signal transduction, and the pathogenic mechanisms of pulmonary arterial hypertension. This role involves conducting diverse tasks crucial to supporting the lab's impactful research, encompassing multidimensional experiments and assays (e.g., single-cell RNAseq experiments using human and animal lung tissues, molecular biological experiments on membrane receptor expression and distribution in lung vascular cells). The ideal candidate will demonstrate autonomy within the research team, utilizing extensive experience and sound judgment to strategize and achieve predefined objectives within research projects. A high level of creativity and latitude is expected, along with a comprehensive understanding of various laboratory concepts, practices, and procedures. The successful candidate will work in the laboratory on various projects on gene expression and profiling at the level of single cell, cell-to-cell interaction in lung vascular disease, membrane receptor (e.g., GPCR), intracellular signal transduction, and the pathogenic mechanisms of pulmonary arterial hypertension, and isolation and preparation of single cells from human and animal lung tissues. This individual should have extensive experience in basic and advanced cell/molecular biological techniques (e.g., single-cell RNAsequencing, conforcal imaging and live cell imaging on receptor activation and intracellular signaling, cell morphological assays, WB and real-time RT-PCR, gene transfection and siRNA/plasmid transfection).

Job duties include but are not limited to:

- Conduct advanced cellular and molecular biological experiments on membrane receptors and signaling proteins, intracellular signaling cascades associated with cell proliferation and phenotypic transition, and the pathogenic mechanisms involved in pulmonary arterial hypertension and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Utilize advanced molecular biological methodologies (e.g., single-cell RNAseq) to execute experiments and deliver data for publications.

 - Assist in overseeing the daily operations of the Yuan Laboratory, including equipment maintenance, experimental animal protocols, and ensuring efficient laboratory functionality. Manage procurement by placing orders and reconciling purchases through various marketplaces.

- Provide hands-on mentorship and training to visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, guiding them through the design and implementation of molecular biological experiments, nurturing their professional development. Offer expert guidance to lab research trainees, enabling them to enrich their research capabilities and contribute significantly to ongoing projects.

- Attend and contribute to lab meetings, presenting findings and insights gleaned from research endeavors.

Expected Salary:

$70,000 - $80,000 annually DOE.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in an appropriate scientific discipline (e.g., Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology) required. A minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Excellent problem solving and organization skills
  • Proficient oral and written communication
  • Ability to efficiently perform a variety of molecular biological and biochemical assays including single-cell RNA-seq analysis, protein-protein interaction assays using FRET and coimmunoprecipitation (CoIP), overexpression and knockdown membrane receptors using plasmid and siRNA, real-time RT-PCR, Western Blots and immuncytochemistry.
