Job Description:

The Biomedical Informatics Program (BMI), hosted within the Department of Health Outcomes and Biomedical Informatics (HOBI) and closely affiliated with the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), engages in a wide variety of informatics research and service across the University of Florida. Service initiatives include building out the informatics infrastructure for the OneFlorida + Clinical Research Network; genomics infrastructure; and cohort construction. This position will work under the guidance of Dr. Rui Yin, in collaboration with a team of data scientists, clinicians, bioinformaticians and computer scientists to fulfill the research and service missions of the BMI program, especially for bioinformatics projects. In particular, the incumbent will lead the software development of a genomics data pooling infrastructure and other related research projects, including but not limited to data collection and preprocessing, predictive model construction, genomic analysis, writing manuscripts, and engage in grants writing. Strong expertise in programming, bioinformatics pipeline construction and genomics analysis is necessary to fulfill the duties of this position.

Duties Include:

Participate in the development of genomic infrastructure and bioinformatic pipeline as well as related downstream research tasks with an interdisciplinary team of bioinformaticists, software developers, information quality experts, statisticians, and researchers.

Handle data queries and preprocessing, model construction and evaluation such as dealing EHR and genomics data, genomic analysis, e.g., GWAS and single-cell analysis, for research questions.

Participate in the design, implementation, and reporting of research and evaluation studies. Contributions to scientific reports, conference papers, and journal articles are expected, including documentation of the method, presentation of data, and participation in the interpretation of results.

Assist with the development of technical project proposals to build new software or deploy and update existing software used in data cleanup, ETL, and related tasks.

Assist with the workflow of incoming data requests and other processes around the management, transformation, and analysis of data.  Recommend and assist with the development of workflow and process changes to enhance the efficiency of tracking and delivery.  Participate and contribute to the communication of requests and results delivery.  Assist with the management of data governance around data sets.


Expected Salary:

$56,484 - $68,604

Minimum Requirements:

PhD degree in biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, biomedical engineering, mathematics or related fields.


Preferred Qualifications:

Proficient in one or more programming languages used in bioinformatics, such as Python, R and Java.

Strong understanding of algorithms and data structures and experience with bioinformatics tools (Fastqc, Hisat2, etc.) and databases commonly used in the field (e.g., NCBI, and UniProt).

Strong passion and motivation for research with solid understanding of biological concepts and knowledge of genetics and genomics to solve practical biomedical problems.

Ability to work collaboratively with other members of a research team, including biologists and computer scientists.

Familiarity with Whole Genome Sequencing and Whole Exome Sequencing data, workflows and pipelines.

Familiarity with computing and UI design platforms/tools, including but not limited to AWS, AWS Omics, Nextflow,  Snakemake, etc.

Experience in machine learning modeling and GWAS analysis.
