Job Description:

The Hoffman Research Laboratory in the Division of Cellular and Molecular Therapy of the Department of Pediatrics is accepting applications to fill the position of a Biological Scientist II. The incumbent will perform laboratory experiments using gene therapy applications and procedures established in this lab. This will include but will not be limited to: PCR for genotyping, cloning, protein assays, western blots, tissue culture, immunofluorescence, histology, and various other molecular biology/biochemistry experiments. The position involves direct contact with rodent models. The individual in this position is expected to function with minimal supervision and troubleshoot simple to moderately complex scientific issues independently.


This position is an intermediate biological scientist in a research lab studying immune tolerance and adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy in autoimmune disease.
 
The Biological Scientist II must be able to perform the following essential functions: 
 
Animal Studies:
Maintaining regulatory compliance of animal colony on behalf of Principal Investigator with minimal supervision. Handling mice for conducting animal experiments. Responsible for maintaining animal colony to ensure sustainable and appropriate colony size to complete research objectives.  Will participate in treating animals with pharmacological agents or AAV vectors either through i.p., i.m., or i.v. injection.  Other duties with the mice may include doing behavioral experiments, force mechanics, and euthanasia for tissue collection.
 
Cellular analysis and Multi-parametric flow cytometry:
Collection and processing of blood samples. Isolation and purification of cells and cellular components from tissues. In vivo/in vitro cellular and functional assays
 
Molecular techniques and analysis:
Complete molecular cloning, plasmid purification, primer design, RNA and DNA isolation, isolating RNA and performing real-time PCR, and PCR genotyping of transgenic mouse lines in accordance with research guidelines.  Identify and resolve molecular experiments issues to ensure reproducibility of results. Coordinate and participate in in vitro/in vivo studies exploring transfection of novel vectors. This may include expansion/maintenance of cell lines and analysis of transfection/infection. This work will also include substantial tissue culture responsibilities essential to achieving research objectives.  Incumbent is expected to maintain tissue/cell lines and troubleshoot maintenance issues should they arise. Conduct analysis of molecular activities and present findings. Coordinate and plan the extraction and quantification of protein from cells and tissues, western blot, co-immunoprecipitation, proteomics studies. Histology Analysis:
Collecting organs and other tissue and embedding the specimens for sectioning either with a microtome or cryotome (for frozen sections).  Following preparation of slides with sectioned tissue, staining with standard histology stains such as H&E, as well as with immunohistochemistry will be done.  Coordinate and participate in the image capture and analysis of tissue following intervention studies.  This includes treating mice, collecting tissue and processing for analysis. Conduct analysis of histological work and present findings.
 
Regulatory Compliance:
Responsible for ensure regulatory compliance or all lab activities, ordering and reconciling of laboratory supplies in advance of planned experiments, and coordinating of lab activities/schedule to achieve research objective, Teaching and assisting junior lab member to ensure research success and timelines. 
Present researching findings to PI and at laboratory meetings. Maintain laboratory safety programs and
train personnel in laboratory safety techniques. Patriciate in the writing of grants, papers, and statements
of work.
Expected Salary:

$45,600 - $55,000 annually; commensurate within this range based on qualifications and experience.
Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field. 


 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with AAV: using, designing, manufacturing.
  • Experience performing rodent procedures – Including injections and sample collection.
  • Knowledge of UF Marketplace, IACUC, EH&S – general lab management
  • Must be meticulous in recording, tracking & reporting of data collected
