The Fresno State Library is seeking a Temporary Special Collections Librarian (7.50-WTUs/20 hours per week) to serve the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature (ANC). 

Housed in our Library Technology and Collection Management Division, the ANC is an internationally renowned research center in the Library at California State University Fresno. It has the distinction of being one of North America’s leading resources for the study of children’s and young adult literature. The growing collection of 70,000 books, periodicals, manuscripts, original art, and papers of authors and illustrators has an international and multicultural emphasis with a focus on diversity and inclusion. 

As the librarian for this specialized collection, the Librarian’s duties balance the academic purpose of the ANC with using its collections and programs to build relationships in the community to support the Center. 

A successful candidate will have the opportunity to: 

  • Collaborate with teaching faculty from various departments, including (but not limited to) History, Art & Design, and English.
  • Curate and develop the collection to continue the ANC’s legacy as a champion of diverse children’s literature.
  • Manage archival, ephemeral, and manuscript collections.
  • Plan events and programming for the ANC.
  • Catalog new materials as needed.
  • Work with our digital services team to create innovative digital displays and exhibits.  
  • Serve as ambassador from the Library to the University and the larger community.

Conditional Appointment

Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.

Appointees will be required to demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States (Fresno State is not a sponsoring agency for Temporary Faculty positions).

Compensation - Commensurate by qualifications and experience within salary range placement. The salary ranges are established by the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2920 for 12-month Librarian).

The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master's degree is $6,190.00 - $7,794.00 per a month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary will be adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per an academic term.

Required Qualifications:

EducationAn earned MLIS (or equivalent) from an American Library Association-accredited institution or program recognized by the American Library Association as an international equivalent.

Experience:  

  • Minimum of two years or more of experience relevant to the library, special collections, and/or archives management.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and in cooperation with faculty, staff, and students from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds regardless of age, gender, marital status, religion, sexual orientation or disabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Preferred Experience:

  • Two or more years of paid, professional experience as librarian.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of children’s literature and research trends in the field or other relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated facility and successful experience with current and emerging technology as it applies to collection management, outreach, and instruction.
  • Professional experience with collection development in children’s literature. 
  • Familiarity with special collections librarianship and/or archives.
  • Experience with original cataloging.
  • Experience with planning, organizing and executing successful events.
  • Experience designing and setting up exhibits.
  • Experience with copyright issues and advanced research assistance. 
  • Excellent presentation skills.
