Description of Work Unit
The Office of Engagement and Extension (OEE), in cooperation with the CSU colleges and other units, has general charge over the University’s educational programs and services across the areas of engaged scholarship, extension, and extended studies, which complement and reinforce the research, teaching, and service missions of CSU. OEE is collaborative space for faculty, staff, and students pursuing and promoting community-based research, service-learning, industry partnerships, and other forms of the scholarship of engagement. In partnership with the CSU colleges and other divisions, OEE faculty and staff work throughout the state of Colorado to engage individuals and communities in the design, implementation, and application of scholarship and educational opportunities. The Vice President for the Office of Engagement and Extension is the principal administrative, academic, and fiscal officer for the division, reports to the CSU President, and works closely with the Provost/Executive Vice President. The Office of Engagement and Extension includes over 400 employees with a total budget across the enterprises of approximately $85 million. OEE is one of the most institutionally comprehensive commitments to engagement and outreach among all land-grant and other universities. Propelled by OEE’s leadership, nationally CSU is a Carnegie Engaged University (2008, 2014), is a member of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, is an APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity University (2016) and is highly ranked for its online degree programs. Position Summary
OEE invites applications and nominations for an Extension County Specialist, Agriculture. This is a full-time, twelve (12) month, non-tenure track faculty position on the Extension instructor track (instructor, senior, master) or the Extension professor track (assistant, associate, professor) dependent upon the candidate’s academic credentials and professional experience. The faculty appointment, evaluation, and promotion standards are centered around the three core duties of extension faculty – educate, create, and connect. Candidates are sought with interests that complement and expand upon current initiatives and education activities in OEE.
Colorado State University Extension and Boulder County are seeking an agriculture professional with the experience and skills to lead a diverse and inclusive agriculture program. The person will have a proven track record of successful teaching and evaluation, creating innovative programming opportunities for diverse constituents, public speaking, providing technical consultation, building program capacity through grants and contracts, and fostering both internal and external collaboration and teamwork. The Extension Specialist will be an effective communicator with the experience and skills to engage with a variety of people and groups, including the Boulder County Commissioners and other policy-makers in Boulder County government. The individual in this position works as a member of the Boulder County Extension team and as a local representative of Colorado State University.
The primary office location for this position is in Longmont, CO while this position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, the individual is expected to maintain a balance establishing a presence in the primary office, to effectively carry out the duties of the position. The work schedule will vary, and occasional nights and weekends will be required.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the area of production agriculture, including familiarity with organic farming and sustainable agriculture practices (carbon sequestration, soil conservation), business development and management, market development, and other topics that support Boulder County’s strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices.
  • Experience with on-farm research or demonstration projects.
  • Experience with identification and management of pests (insects, diseases, weeds, etc.), plant nutrient deficiencies, crop fertility, and abiotic stress of field crops and agroecology practices that promote cropping system health.
  • Extensive knowledge of organic farming and sustainable agriculture, including soil health, carbon sequestration, soil conservation and other topics that support Boulder County’s strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in consulting on agronomy, soils, irrigation, natural resources, plant insects and disease.
  • Training in conflict resolution/mediation and/or demonstrated experience facilitating public dialogues.
  • Demonstrated successful experience engaging with public officials in policy decision-making on controversial topics.
  • Familiarity with small acreage management.
  • Ability to speak Spanish.

Educate includes the categories of non-credit engaged teaching, providing consultation, and technical assistance. The following expectations refer to all aspects of educational program delivery in both online and residential settings. Community-engaged teaching is valued, and examples include service-learning, community-engaged research, and online and off-campus education. For engaged teaching, innovation can be demonstrated by evidence of peer review; awards; grants to improve content; and demonstration of adaptation or improvement. Specifically, candidates will design, develop, and implement onsite and online non-credit Extension teaching, educational programming, and other non-credit courses of instruction. Other examples of professional practice relate to continuing, professional, and executive education. CSU Extension faculty with the primary role of educate will provide engaged teaching, technical assistance, evidence-based guidance, facilitation, consultation, and other services and educational methods and interventions to learners of all ages and that are accessible to historically underrepresented individuals and groups. Examples of expectations include:
  • Develop and conduct educational programming in areas of production agriculture in response to local needs.

There are several guidelines for create, but the most significant are applied, participatory research, grant funding, and a record of engaged scholarship.
