Job Purpose

To support this commitment, the University of Glasgow Community Team is seeking to recruit a motivated, enthusiastic and customer-focused team of 8 students/recent graduates to join the Welcome Team.

The Welcome Team plays a vital role in helping students feel welcomed, informed and supported as they transition to life at the University and in Glasgow. Team members will use their own experience and knowledge of student life to provide reassurance, guidance and practical support to students from a wide range of backgrounds and communities.

Working alongside the Community Engagement Team, the Welcome Team will support the delivery of a varied Welcome & Orientation programme, including staffing a dedicated Welcome Desk, leading campus and local area tours, and supporting social, wellbeing and networking events. Team members may also work in pairs at Glasgow International Airport and other arrival points as part of the University’s Meet and Greet Service, helping incoming students navigate onward travel and settle into the city.

The role will also involve encouraging students to engage with the wide range of activities, services, student groups and opportunities available across the University and wider Glasgow community, helping foster connection, community and belonging from the beginning of the student journey.

The Welcome Team may also support a range of wider community engagement activity throughout the semester, including events and initiatives designed to support different student communities and promote wellbeing, inclusion and peer connection across campus.

Training takes place on Wednesday 9th September.  Attending training is mandatory and in-person. Please do not apply if you cannot attend training.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

1. Welcoming students and representing the University of Glasgow in a professional, approachable and inclusive manner during Welcome and Orientation activities.

2. Acting as a first point of contact for students, responding to general enquiries and signposting more detailed or complex queries to relevant University services or the Community Engagement Team.

3. Supporting students in navigating the campus, local area and wider Glasgow community, including helping students use University apps, maps and transport information.

4. Delivering campus and local area walking tours and supporting a range of Welcome, Orientation and community-building activities including social events, wellbeing activities, Welcome Desks and informal drop-in sessions.

5. Encouraging participation in University activities, student groups, support services and wider community opportunities to promote belonging and positive transition into student life.

6. Supporting arrival activity at Glasgow International Airport and other arrival points, assisting students with onward travel information and settling into the city.

7. Assisting with the promotion of Welcome activities and distributing relevant information and resources to students.

8. Supporting inclusive engagement activity across a range of student communities, including international, commuting, mature and other underrepresented student groups.

9. Assisting the Community Engagement Team with additional activities, events and projects as required throughout the Welcome period.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Current student or recent graduate of the University of Glasgow.

A2 Good knowledge of the University campus, key student services and a general understanding of the student experience and transition into university life.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate information, guidance and support effectively to a wide range of students. C2 Ability to show empathy and deal sensitively, respectfully and inclusively with students from a wide range of backgrounds and communities.

C3 Professional, enthusiastic and approachable manner with the ability to create a welcoming and supportive environment. C4 Ability to remain calm under pressure, respond flexibly to changing situations and provide reassurance where required.

C5 Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage confidently with students, staff and visitors. C6 Good organisational and time management skills with the ability to work independently, prioritise tasks and see activities through to completion.

C7 Ability to work positively as part of a team and contribute to an inclusive and supportive team environment.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Experience of working both independently and as part of a team. E2 Experience of responding to enquiries, problem-solving and supporting others in a customer-facing or peer support environment.

E3 Experience of delivering a high standard of customer service, support, guidance or peer engagement activity.

Desirable:

F1 Experience of working in a student-facing, community engagement or customer service role. F2 Experience of leading tours, activities or events.

F3 Experience of presenting or speaking to groups. F4 Experience of supporting events, busy environments or crowd management activity.

F5 Experience of working with students or individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 3, £24,685 - £25,249 per annum pro rata.

This post is offered on a fractional basis and is fixed term until the 18th of October 2026.
