An exciting opportunity to join LIPID MAPS as a Web Developer has arisen. You will be based at Cardiff University, and will provide the core support for maintaining, reviewing and expanding the current web-based resource (http://www.lipidmaps.org ). 

LIPID MAPS is the largest curated public lipid database in the world, and is led jointly by Cardiff, Babraham Institute Cambridge and University of California San Diego, funded by the Wellcome Trust.  LIPID MAPS hosts several databases, software tools, structure drawing tools, an encyclopaedia, educational resources, webinars, data deposition functions and more, and serves a global community of around 66K scientists researching lipids.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in website development, serving data originating from relational databases via an API and web front-end.  The successful candidate will be required to advise and lead a code review of the present website and implement changes in-line with future developments and functionality. 

This post will work with other developers building databases and lipid-analysis tools, and will be asked to help integrate new functionalities into the website.  The database currently uses Postgres with SQL between databases. Additionally, this post holder will be responsible for triaging user queries from the website to other members of the team.

Skills required are: HTML, PHP, Git, SQL, Javascript and some experience of a general-purpose language such as Python or Perl. Experience of serving queries to a relational databases (Postgres) and serving results back to webpages.  Experience of monitoring web accesses via Google Analytics or other methods.

Salary: £33,797 - £40,322 per annum (Grade 6).

Job Purpose

Support the University within the LIPID MAPS project as a Web Developer, carrying out supporting work, providing advice, guidance and support, and leading projects within this area

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Duties

• Web development and programming for LIPID MAPS. Developing content and new interfaces for working with the databases.
• Coordinate and implement development objectives from members of the multi centre LIPID MAPS team.
• Provide professional advice and guidance on Web Development within the LIPID MAPS processes and procedures to internal and external customers that will have institute wide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
• Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within the Web Developer role where they fall within set role objectives.
• Investigate and analyse specific issues within the Web Developer role, creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within web development.
• Ensure that the provision of Web development is delivered to the institution, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements.
• Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required.
• Create specific working groups from colleagues across the University to achieve LIPID MAPS objectives
• Plan and deliver specific small scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed. For example, integration of new database searching tools into the website.
• Develop and deliver training within Web development.
• Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department.
• Instruct and guide other employees across the University within Web development as required.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

1. BSc in Informatics/computing or related discipline, such as engineering, or equivalent experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2. Substantial experience of working within Web development including, HTML, PHP, Git, SQL & JavaScript & experience of Python or Pearl
3. Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within Web development to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers
4. Proven experience in developing new processes, procedures and Web services
5. Experience of front end web design and development

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working

6. Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people
7. Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving

8. Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions
9. Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within Web development.
10. Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams
