Aston University is an ambitious institution built on strong foundations and very much on an upwards trajectory. Recent accolades include Guardian University of the Year 2020, the Times Higher Education (THE) Entrepreneurial University of the Year and a top 25 ranking in the Guardian’s 2022 league table.
With student growth to over 18,000 students, TEF gold and a strong financial position, the strategic foundations created by our outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alec Cameron, are firmly in place for his successor to take Aston to the next level.
Aston’s strategy is committed to delivering positive change for its core beneficiaries - students, business and the professions, and the wider city region and communities. The University is renowned for its commitment to the future success of its students through adding significant value (top 20 LEO salary), social mobility (#2 in England) and providing a modern, supportive and multicultural environment for all its staff and students.
As pioneers of the placement year, Aston has an outstanding reputation for producing work-ready graduates from diverse backgrounds, and with 70% of its students from an ethnic minority, it is among the UK’s most diverse universities. The University’s research and knowledge exchange performance and profile is strong for the size of the institution, developing applied research in four specialist institutes and 15 centres, with a compelling track record of bids, collaboration and engagement in the UK and internationally.
The Candidate
Following Professor Cameron’s appointment to RMIT as Vice-Chancellor, Aston University is looking to appoint his successor. The University’s new Vice-Chancellor will inherit a high-performing institution with both the platform and appetite for further development, innovation and growth.
She or he will provide inclusive and inspiring leadership and management, and continue to deliver an environment which is diverse, innovative and transformational. The new Vice-Chancellor will develop further the research, teaching and enterprise profile of the institution, whilst deepening Aston’s strong links to business and the region and enhancing international opportunities. Strengthening the focus further on a specialist, applied portfolio in Business, Health, Science and Technology at undergraduate and postgraduate is key to the University’s ongoing positioning in the sector.
Ultimately, she or he will provide compelling leadership that will further improve the academic performance and standing of the University. Whether currently based in the UK or overseas, the successful candidate will combine strategic leadership and management experience in a complex setting with ambition, innovation and drive. They will bring a demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and widening participation, coupled with the personal presence to represent Aston regionally, nationally, and internationally.
A values-driven individual, they will be credible in providing academic leadership across teaching, learning and research, and have proven capability in influencing external stakeholders in government, industry and the third sector. Financial acumen alongside a good understanding of the issues facing higher education at present are highly desirable attributes.
