The University of Cambridge is pleased to announce this opportunity for a qualified and experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join our team, as part of a Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) traineeship within the University Biomedical Services (UBS) division.
Working alongside a team of other NVSs you shall provide a comprehensive veterinary services to the animal species housed within University biomedical research facilities. This shall include the provision of technical advice, clinical care and veterinary treatments, support and delivery of training within the UBS Training School and ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory standards.
You will support the NVSs with effective delivery and management of programmes for health surveillance and disease control, animal import / exports, risks relating to zoonotic and notifiable diseases and disease outbreak management. You will also support the Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body (AWERB) process providing advice to licensees in regard to animal health and welfare matters. You shall also contribute to the review, development and implementation of policies and procedures within the establishment to ensure continued compliance with legislation, regulation and best practice particularly with regard to the 3Rs.
Applicants must have their own method of transport in order to travel between biomedical facility sites and respond to out of hours emergency call outs.
Fixed Term: The role is available immediately, for a fixed period of two years as part of a traineeship to provide the training and experience necessary to become a full NVS.
Once appointed, you shall undertake the duties and responsibilities of a Veterinary Surgeon, alongside a Training Plan, approximately 12 months in duration, to gain the necessary training and expertise required to receive NVS accreditation. Once achieved you shall be promoted to the NVS role (salary £41526 - £55,559), undertaking the full duties and responsibilities of an NVS for the remainder of the contract.
You must be a qualified veterinarian, with membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Official Veterinarian (OV) training and registration would also be an advantage. You will have experience and skills in veterinary medicine and surgery with demonstrable knowledge of the Veterinary Surgeons Act (VSA), Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR) and other relevant legislation. Knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, and other relevant legislation pertaining to the holding, import transport and export of experimental animals, health surveillance and disease control are desirable. Knowledge of the species used and types of work conducted within the University would also be an advantage.
